Lesson: Zephaniah: From Judgment to Restoration

The Book of Zephaniah contains three chapters, the author of the book is Zephaniah and it was written to Israel and all nations. The timeline for these events took place approximately between 639BC and 609BC. The purpose of the book was to warn all nations of Judgment Day. What we are to learn from the book is that God rather save then destroy, and is mighty to save all who come to Him, [Zephaniah 3:17 The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.]
God, spoke to Zephaniah during the time that Josiah was king and had made drastic changes in Judah and all the land of Israel in a plea to stop the judgment God had placed upon them. And while God was pleased with what he was doing, His judgment stood. Through Zephaniah, God, gives them their judgment.
[Zephaniah 1:1-4 The word of the LORD which came unto Zephaniah the son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hizkiah, in the days of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah. 2 I will utterly consume all things from off the land, saith the LORD. 3 I will consume man and beast; I will consume the fowls of the heaven, and the fishes of the sea, and the stumblingblocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the land, saith the LORD. 4 I will also stretch out mine hand upon Judah, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, and the name of the Chemarims with the priests;]
Perhaps more grievous to God than the heathen who openly rejects Him is the one who proclaims His Name yet bows before other gods. God, can accept the one that refuses to humble before Him and He can accept the who that does. But He will not receive the one who seeks to hold Christ in one hand and idols in the other; divided allegiance is no offering in His sight. Through Zephaniah, God, has declared His judgment as a day of sacrifice.
[Zephaniah 1:5–8 And them that worship the host of heaven upon the housetops; and them that worship and that swear by the LORD, and that swear by Malcham; 6 And them that are turned back from the LORD; and those that have not sought the LORD, nor enquired for him. 7 Hold thy peace at the presence of the Lord GOD: for the day of the LORD is at hand: for the LORD hath prepared a sacrifice, he hath bid his guests. 8 And it shall come to pass in the day of the LORD’S sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, and the king’s children, and all such as are clothed with strange apparel.]
The day of God’s wrath will strip unrepentant sinners of all they possess and leave them with nothing but anguish and pain, and even the redeemed will not stand untouched by His holy displeasure. We cannot imagine that God is indifferent to the corruption of any generation, least of all our own, nor can we suppose that He overlooks the sins found among His very own people. His holiness does not bend to the spirit of the age; His judgment begins at His house. If any of this sounds familiar, Jesus spoke of it this way.
[Matthew 22:11-14 And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment: 12 And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. 13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 14 For many are called, but few are chosen.]
God, is addressing those who think they are hid from Him and that He does not see what they are doing. God, speaks in the manner of those who walk in darkness, declaring that He will search the hidden places with candles, exposing every deed that men imagine concealed.
[Zephaniah 1:12-14,17 And it shall come to pass at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with candles, and punish the men that are settled on their lees: that say in their heart, The LORD will not do good, neither will he do evil. 13 Therefore their goods shall become a booty, and their houses a desolation: they shall also build houses, but not inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, but not drink the wine thereof. 14 The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly. 17 And I will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the LORD: and their blood shall be poured out as dust, and their flesh as the dung.]
In other words, God, will fully uncover and fully punish. Their lees, like wine left to settle without being poured from vessel to vessel, have thickened and grown foul. So it is with hearts that have never been stirred by repentance; untouched by refining grace, they harden in their corruption and remain fixed in their sin. Every effort they make to preserve themselves will prove vain. God, gives the lost ample time to come to His Son; yet the day will surely come when time will be up. Zephaniah, pleads with all mankind to seek God now.
[Zephaniah 2:1-4 Gather yourselves together, yea, gather together, O nation not desired; 2 Before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD come upon you, before the day of the LORD’S anger come upon you. 3 Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD’S anger. 4 For Gaza shall be forsaken, and Ashkelon a desolation: they shall drive out Ashdod at the noon day, and Ekron shall be rooted up.]
It is striking to see familiar nations named here still walking through turmoil today. Gaza, has been a thorn in the side of God’s people for centuries, and its present ruin is heartbreaking to behold. Yet as much as the world, and even our own nation attempts to stay the hand of God or soften His judgments, His judgments will always stand. God, never sends destruction without first giving ample warning, calling men to repentance before the day of reckoning arrives. Though many will harden their hearts, a remnant will always turn, for God preserves a people for Himself even in the midst of judgment. Through Zephaniah, God, goes on to give Moab their judgment.
[Zephaniah 2:6-9 And the sea coast shall be dwellings and cottages for shepherds, and folds for flocks. 7 And the coast shall be for the remnant of the house of Judah; they shall feed thereupon: in the houses of Ashkelon shall they lie down in the evening: for the LORD their God shall visit them, and turn away their captivity. 8 I have heard the reproach of Moab, and the revilings of the children of Ammon, whereby they have reproached my people, and magnified themselves against their border. 9 Therefore as I live, saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Surely Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah, even the breeding of nettles, and saltpits, and a perpetual desolation: the residue of my people shall spoil them, and the remnant of my people shall possess them.]
This remnant of Judah is referring to the time when the Jews, primarily those of Judah, would released from their seventy‑year captivity in Babylon. Though the decree granted freedom to all, the majority chose to remain in Babylon, having grown settled in a foreign land. Only a remnant returned to Jerusalem, the small company whose hearts were still stirred for the Lord’s house and His covenant purposes, [Nehemiah 7:66-67 The whole congregation together was forty and two thousand three hundred and threescore, 67 Beside their manservants and their maidservants, of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty and seven: and they had two hundred forty and five singing men and singing women.]
When God’s patience has run its course, He will pour out His wrath on those who despise Him and His people without restraint, and fire will fall from heaven as it did upon Sodom and Gomorrah, [Genesis 19:24-25 Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; 25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.]
As long as God lives, He will unfailingly defend and preserve the remnant of His people; and because He is eternal, His protection over them is without end. Yet if there is one sin that God consistently exposes and condemns, it is pride. As we continue through Zephaniah, God addresses this very spirit, the arrogance that lifts itself against His holiness and refuses to bow before His sovereignty.
[Zephaniah 2:10-13,15 This shall they have for their pride, because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of the LORD of hosts. 11 The LORD will be terrible unto them: for he will famish all the gods of the earth; and men shall worship him, every one from his place, even all the isles of the heathen. 12 Ye Ethiopians also, ye shall be slain by my sword. 13 And he will stretch out his hand against the north, and destroy Assyria; and will make Nineveh a desolation, and dry like a wilderness. 15 This is the rejoicing city that dwelt carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! every one that passeth by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.]
This is also in reference to Moab and Ammon, the descendants of Lot, the tragic, incestuous offspring born after his escape from Sodom. Lot, had lived in that wicked city until the day God rained fire from heaven and utterly destroyed it. The only reason Lot was spared was that there remained in him a measure of faith; yet his heart was often divided, for his love for the world continually overshadowed his devotion to God, [Genesis 18:32 And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten’s sake.]
God, does not want His own to be in the midst of His judgments, those who are saved will be hid from the worst. Perhaps more dangerous than worshiping false gods is making yourself one. At this point, Zephaniah himself is overwhelmed by the devastation of Jerusalem, and cannot understand why they prefer their sin over God.
[Zephaniah 3:1-5 Woe to her that is filthy and polluted, to the oppressing city! 2 She obeyed not the voice; she received not correction; she trusted not in the LORD; she drew not near to her God. 3 Her princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they gnaw not the bones till the morrow. 4 Her prophets are light and treacherous persons: her priests have polluted the sanctuary, they have done violence to the law. 5 The just LORD is in the midst thereof; he will not do iniquity: every morning doth he bring his judgment to light, he faileth not; but the unjust knoweth no shame.]
It astonishes me how deeply the world plunges into sin and how corruption seems to thicken with each passing day. Being a Christian can feel frightening at times, for we are the minority and the weight of persecution grows heavier, yet I would far rather suffer for Christ than stand before God having embraced the sins this age celebrates, whether the rejection of His created order or the taking of innocent life. And we must be concerned, for those who commit such things are not our enemies; they are lost souls who desperately need Jesus, [II Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.]
With the way the world is moving, the return of Jesus could occur at any moment, gathering His people before the darkness becomes unbearable. And when that hour arrives, God’s wrath will be poured out over the whole earth in a singlemoment. Why? Because He is a jealous God, and the same fire that fell upon Sodom and Gomorrah will fall again to purge the world of its evil. Through Zephaniah, God, warns of the day when the earth will be consumed by His fiery judgment.
[Zephaniah 3:7-9 I said, Surely thou wilt fear me, thou wilt receive instruction; so their dwelling should not be cut off, howsoever I punished them: but they rose early, and corrupted all their doings. 8 Therefore wait ye upon me, saith the LORD, until the day that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy. 9 For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with one consent.]
Sometimes God’s greatest efforts to win someone to Christ is through fear. It is often the fear of death or even someone’s death that leads someone to look for Christ in the first place. Regardless of how we are led to Christ, the most important thing to do is to accept Him before we die or He returns, [Romans 6:22-23 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. 23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.]
God, willingly saves and rejoices over anyone who comes to Him through His Son, He promises that while we may be afflicted from time to time, we will be saved from the worse that is yet to come, and not only that, join Him in Zion.
[Zephaniah 3:12-15 I will also leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people, and they shall trust in the name of the LORD. 13 The remnant of Israel shall not do iniquity, nor speak lies; neither shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed and lie down, and none shall make them afraid. 14 Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel; be glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Jerusalem. 15 The LORD hath taken away thy judgments, he hath cast out thine enemy: the king of Israel, even the LORD, is in the midst of thee: thou shalt not see evil any more.]
What a day it will be when the wrath of God is finally halted and evil is ended forever, no more sin, sickness, sorrow, pain, suffering, or even death. Salvation, does not rest upon any group, sect, race, or religion; it rests upon one Person alone, the Lord Jesus Christ. He is our Saviour and our King, and He will dwell in the midst of His people throughout all eternity.
[Zephaniah 3:17-20 The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. 18 I will gather them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly, who are of thee, to whom the reproach of it was a burden. 19 Behold, at that time I will undo all that afflict thee: and I will save her that halteth, and gather her that was driven out; and I will get them praise and fame in every land where they have been put to shame. 20 At that time will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you: for I will make you a name and a praise among all people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity before your eyes, saith the LORD.]
The fulfillment of this prophecy will be seen in the gathering of Christ’s Church, as His people are called from every nation under heaven. The glory and happiness of those who endure this present life will be perfect, unchanging, and eternal, when at last we are freed from all earthly sorrows and every tear is wiped away, [Revelation 21:3-4 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. 4 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.]
Today’s Prayer: God, Thank You for giving us hope and assurance of the glorious day in which all nations will come together as one, speak one language, and worship only You in the kingdom that You are preparing for Your believers. You desire our fellowship, our devotion, and our reliance on You for all our needs as You delight in providing everything we have need of. Thank You for all that You do and allow in my life and in everything that You do. Lead me and guide me in Your will and ways, help me to labor only for the things that give You glory, for I know that as long as I am in You I will be taken care of and even receive much more than I imagine. I love You Lord, and pray this in Your name, Jesus, Amen.
