Chapters: Numbers 1-2
Message: Called To Be A Soldier

Hello My Friend,

The Book of Numbers contains thirty-six chapters, the author is Moses and it was originally written to the Jews. The timeline for these events took place approximately between 1490-1451BC. The purpose of the book was to record the forty years that the Jews were in the wilderness as a result of their disbelief of God. What we are to learn from the book is that God is not pleased with anything less than total commitment to Him. “If a man vow a vow unto the LORD, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond; he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth.” – Numbers 30:2.

Army; a military unit usually consisting of two or more bands of people with supporting arms and services, any large body of people united for some specific purpose. It had been two years since God brought the Jews out of bondage to Egypt, God ordered the first census among the people, every male twenty years and older was numbered according to their tribe and drafted into the army.

And the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tabernacle of the congregation, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying, Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, after their families, by the house of their fathers, with the number of their names, every male by their polls; From twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel: thou and Aaron shall number them by their armies. These are those that were numbered, which Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, being twelve men: each one was for the house of his fathers. So were all those that were numbered of the children of Israel, by the house of their fathers, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Israel; Even all they that were numbered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.” – Numbers 1:1-3,44-46.

all that are able to go forth to war in Israel:As Christians we are facing a war, not one with physical fighting, but spiritual, God versus the devil, and all who are able to go to war (all who are saved) are called to fight. The only way to combat it is by arming ourselves with the weapons necessary to defeat the devil, and those are God, Jesus, the Bible, and prayer. There is noting more powerful than the Word of God. “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” – Ephesians 6:10-13.

Now, while everyone Christian is capable of picking up the sword of the Lord and serving God by preaching the Gospel to help save souls, there are some people that He uses specifically to serve Him in the Church. God set aside the Levites just for serving Him in the tabernacle.

But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them. For the LORD had spoken unto Moses, saying, Only thou shalt not number the tribe of Levi, neither take the sum of them among the children of Israel: But thou shalt appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of testimony, and over all the vessels thereof, and over all things that belong to it: they shall bear the tabernacle, and all the vessels thereof; and they shall minister unto it, and shall encamp round about the tabernacle. And when the tabernacle setteth forward, the Levites shall take it down: and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death. And the children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, throughout their hosts. But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel: and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of testimony.” – Numbers 1:47-53.

they shall bear the tabernacle,” While the other tribes were laymen for God the Levites had the task of keeping the holy things holy, meaning make sure everything down to the very last candlestick was put where it was supposed to be. Serving God in His ministry can be very overwhelming because when the world sees them they see Christ, and if any man or woman falls representing the church it is the whole church that suffers, which is why we who serve in the church need to be living by the Word of God in and out of the church. “For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:” – I Peter 2:20-22.

After the tribes were numbered the tribes were given specific areas within the camp to dwell according to the number of people in the tribe. The tribes were to encircle the tabernacle, it was a token of God’s gracious presence among them, yet, they were to pitch their tents afar off, in reverence to the sanctuary, remember, anyone other than a Levite was not allowed to touch any part of the tabernacle or they would die.

Every man of the children of Israel shall pitch by his own standard, with the ensign of their father’s house: far off about the tabernacle of the congregation shall they pitch. These are those which were numbered of the children of Israel by the house of their fathers: all those that were numbered of the camps throughout their hosts were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty. But the Levites were not numbered among the children of Israel; as the LORD commanded Moses. And the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses: so they pitched by their standards, and so they set forward, every one after their families, according to the house of their fathers.” – Numbers 2:2,32-34.

Every man of the children of Israel shall pitch by his own standard,” The tribes were to encircle the tabernacle, which was in the center of the congregation, this was to show all that God sees all, and gives all the same opportunities. God never denies anyone the opportunity to know His Son, and gives the same grace to all who do. Just like the tribes encircled the tabernacle, every family member of God encircles Christ. Now, He will place us in many areas, move us around a few times, and even place people in and out of our lives, but it is all done to edify Him and remind us that He is right there with us. “Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.” – I John 4:4-6,12-14.

Jesus Christ Magnified: Today Jesus is revealed through Moses as he led the people according to God’s commands. “I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.” – John 10:14.

Today’s Prayer: God, Thank You for giving us a way to not only be saved, but be able to fellowship and serve You. It’s amazing that You chose us, and even more amazing that You continue to use us either as soldiers, teachers, or simple laymen to serve You and show the world that You are a merciful, gracious, and loving God who just wants to be a part of their lives. Lord, I want You to be in the center of all that I do, lead me and guide me, teach me Your ways, and give me Your power to be the servant You called me to be. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

God Bless You, I am praying for you,

Christina
