Message: Deuteronomy: Moses Dies

Hello My Friend,

The moment we accept Christ as our Saviour, we become one with Him, and through Him we are brought into union with God Himself. We become children of the one and only living God, Jehovah. Our place in His family is not determined by the earthly home into which we were born, but by our faith in Christ alone. From that point forward, the life we live will reflect His presence within us, for as we walk with Him, His character shines through our words, our choices, and our daily conduct. As we come to the end of the reading of Deuteronomy, When Moses heard from God that the Israelites would turn away from Him after Joshua’s death, he was deeply grieved. It was in this context that God commanded Moses to write a song.

[Deuteronomy 32:1-5  Give ear, O ye heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth.  2  My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:  3  Because I will publish the name of the LORD: ascribe ye greatness unto our God.  4  He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.  5  They have corrupted themselves, their spot is not the spot of his children: they are a perverse and crooked generation.]

There is only one Rock, and that Rock is the LORD, Jesus Christ. His greatness cannot be measured or described, and He alone establishes and upholds all who come to Him by faith, [I Corinthians 10:1-4  Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;  2  And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;  3  And did all eat the same spiritual meat;  4  And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.]

As you can see, Moses was not really surprised to learn that they would turn on God for their history had been marked by stubbornness and rebellion from the very beginning. This song was to be a testimony that Israel would sing when they finally returned to Him after going their own way and experiencing the consequences of their unfaithfulness. This song would stand as both a witness against them and a reminder of God’s justice, His mercy, and His readiness to receive them when they repented. Moses goes on to sing how God chose the Israelites of all the people of the earth.

[Deuteronomy 32:7-10,12,15  Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask thy father, and he will shew thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee.  8  When the most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel.  9  For the LORD’S portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.  10  He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye. 12  So the LORD alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him. 15  But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness; then he forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.]

Jeshurun is another name for the children of Israel, meaning “the dear upright people.” It refers specifically to the descendants of Jacob and is used as a poetic expression of God’s affection for His covenant people. Israel was strong, prosperous, and victorious when they stood together as one nation under God, but they became weak, divided, and vulnerable whenever they forgot Him. We who are saved, born again Christians are no different, and do you know why? One word: lust, [James 4:1-3  From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?  2  Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.  3  Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.]

God is not only grieved by the way His people behave, He is appalled by the attitude with which they do it, without fear, reverence, or the slightest intention of following Him. This is precisely why He scatters them from His presence, a reality vividly described in the song.

[Deuteronomy 32:18-22  Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee.  19  And when the LORD saw it, he abhorred them, because of the provoking of his sons, and of his daughters.  20  And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be: for they are a very froward generation, children in whom is no faith.  21  They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation. 22  For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains.]

This is the same exact thing that we read here, [Romans 1:21-23  Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.  22  Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,  23  And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.]

Grace may save us through our faith in Christ alone, but God remains the same yesterday, today, and forever. Sin is still sin, and He will judge His people for it. They may not lose their salvation because they are standing upon the Rock, but God will not be mocked, He will let them suffer in their sin until they repent of or die in their sin. The rock of this world is none other than Satan himself, and God has something to say about him as well.

[Deuteronomy 32:28-32,35  For they are a nation void of counsel, neither is there any understanding in them.  29  O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end!  30  How should one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, except their Rock had sold them, and the LORD had shut them up?  31  For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges.  32  For their vine is of the vine of Sodom, and of the fields of Gomorrah: their grapes are grapes of gall, their clusters are bitter: 35  To me belongeth vengeance, and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste.]

Think about it. As angry as God may become with His people, the wicked world is far more cruel, and in their corruption they will eventually turn on one another. When we look at the condition of the world today, it is clear that God is not pleased. Yes, He is very long‑suffering, but He will not be mocked. He will judge His people, and He will use the world as an instrument of that judgment. Moses ends the song with the very words of God, declaring how He watches those who reject the true Rock stumble into the very pit they have dug for themselves.

[Deuteronomy 32:39-43  See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.  40  For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I live for ever.  41  If I whet my glittering sword, and mine hand take hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that hate me.  42  I will make mine arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh; and that with the blood of the slain and of the captives, from the beginning of revenges upon the enemy.  43  Rejoice, O ye nations, with his people: for he will avenge the blood of his servants, and will render vengeance to his adversaries, and will be merciful unto his land, and to his people.]

God is forever merciful and forgiving toward His people, no matter how many times they fail because they are standing upon that same spiritual Rock that Israel stood upon. But for those who are not His, for those who have no faith, and especially for those who trust in false gods, He will confront them with the same piercing question: “Where are your gods, the rock in whom you trusted?” [I Corinthians 10:4-5  And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.  5  But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.]

The things we are witnessing today may seem unlike anything we have ever seen before, but God has seen it all. What shocks us is only the surface of what He has watched unfold across millenniums. After Moses finished speaking the words of the song, he left Israel with one final charge: to set their hearts upon God.

[Deuteronomy 32:44-47  And Moses came and spake all the words of this song in the ears of the people, he, and Hoshea the son of Nun.  45  And Moses made an end of speaking all these words to all Israel:  46  And he said unto them, Set your hearts unto all the words which I testify among you this day, which ye shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of this law.  47  For it is not a vain thing for you; because it is your life: and through this thing ye shall prolong your days in the land, whither ye go over Jordan to possess it.]

God did not choose the children of Israel as His people because of their righteousness; He chose them because of the promise He made to one righteous man, Abraham. Yes, some among them were obedient, just as all true Christians strive to be, sinning, repenting, and repeating that cycle many times throughout their earthly journey. Yet the truth is that most Christians are held by the very thread of their salvation and face a mountain of affliction because they are not repentant. In the end, it all comes down to the heart, [Mark 7:21-23  For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,  22  Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:  23  All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.]

It was time for Moses’s earthly journey to come to an end. He had led the people to the border of the promised land, just as God had called him to do. He had given them God’s law, warned them of what was to come, and prepared them to take possession of the land. Now his work was finished. God told him that the time had come for him to go up the mountain where he would die, reminding him once more why he could not set foot in the land he had longed to enter.

[Deuteronomy 32:49-52  Get thee up into this mountain Abarim, unto mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is over against Jericho; and behold the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession:  50  And die in the mount whither thou goest up, and be gathered unto thy people; as Aaron thy brother died in mount Hor, and was gathered unto his people:  51  Because ye trespassed against me among the children of Israel at the waters of Meribah-Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because ye sanctified me not in the midst of the children of Israel.  52  Yet thou shalt see the land before thee; but thou shalt not go thither unto the land which I give the children of Israel.]

How would you feel if this were the last thing God said to you in the flesh? Yet even in this moment, there was one great comfort for Moses. He knew that although he would never step foot on the land of promise, he would soon be in a place far better. True believers never abandon their faith in Christ, even when they have entangled themselves in sin. We must remember that no matter how stubborn or willful we become, we still belong to God, and He never stops defending His own. Before Moses took his final journey on earth, he delivered one last message, his blessing upon every tribe of Israel.

[Deuteronomy 33:1-5  And this is the blessing, wherewith Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death.  2  And he said, The LORD came from Sinai, and rose up from Seir unto them; he shined forth from mount Paran, and he came with ten thousands of saints: from his right hand went a fiery law for them.  3  Yea, he loved the people; all his saints are in thy hand: and they sat down at thy feet; every one shall receive of thy words.  4  Moses commanded us a law, even the inheritance of the congregation of Jacob.  5  And he was king in Jeshurun, when the heads of the people and the tribes of Israel were gathered together.]

Remember, God’s saints are not a collection of long‑dead individuals later declared holy by religious tradition. They are His living, saved, born again people, those who have His Spirit dwelling upon their soul, [Ephesians 2:18-19  For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.  19  Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;]

It is only when we love God with all our heart that we begin to see Christ for who He truly is, not merely as the One who saves us from hell, but as the One who saved us from the life we once lived and from the endless suffering that sin brings. He is our refuge from all these things. Moses concludes his final speech with this very reminder: God is their refuge, their dwelling place, and their defender, as long as they trust in Him.

[Deuteronomy 33:26-29  There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun, who rideth upon the heaven in thy help, and in his excellency on the sky.  27  The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.  28  Israel then shall dwell in safety alone: the fountain of Jacob shall be upon a land of corn and wine; also his heavens shall drop down dew.  29  Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the LORD, the shield of thy help, and who is the sword of thy excellency! and thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee; and thou shalt tread upon their high places.]

Christ is who He truly is, our Deliverer, our Rock, the One who not only defends us but also forms the very foundation beneath our feet. We may lose certain earthly things because, after all, we are sinners living in a fallen world, but we will never lose our salvation, [Romans 6:8-10  Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:  9  Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.  10  For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.]

The land flowing with milk and honey could be seen for miles, but Moses could not enter it. And although he never set foot on the promised land, there was no other prophet who knew God as Moses did, and God made that known to all. The LORD led Moses to the top of Pisgah and allowed him to gaze across the promised land, as well as Gilead, granting him a full view of what he had spent his life leading Israel toward. His time on earth had come to an end, yet even in death, God showed great honor and respect for him.

[Deuteronomy 34:1-6  And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over against Jericho. And the LORD shewed him all the land of Gilead, unto Dan,  2  And all Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim, and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah, unto the utmost sea,  3  And the south, and the plain of the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, unto Zoar.  4  And the LORD said unto him, This is the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, saying, I will give it unto thy seed: I have caused thee to see it with thine eyes, but thou shalt not go over thither.  5  So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD. 6  And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Beth-peor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.]

Can you imagine what must have passed through Moses’s mind as he drew his final breath? After a lifetime of walking with God, leading His people, and speaking with the LORD face‑to‑face, I imagine his heart settling into a prayer like this:

[Psalms 91:1-3,5-6,9-11  He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.  2  I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.  3  Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.  5  Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;  6  Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. 9  Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;  10  There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.  11  For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.]

If you did not notice, God, is the one speaking here, and I tell you what, I have seen (not visibly) His angels over me and they have delivered me from some situations that should have been the death of me. Nevertheless, he knows my name because He has shown me His salvation, [Psalms 91:14-16  Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.  15  He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.  16  With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.]

Today’s Prayer: God, Thank You for the gift of eternal life through Your Son, we do not have to work for our salvation, we just need to believe in and accept that He alone paid the price for our sins in order to receive it. While my salvation can never be earned or repaid, my faith in You will lead me to live my life in a way that is pleasing to You. Lord, You are my Rock, my refuge, and my salvation, and it is You I trust to see me through this life until You bring me home. While I know I make some foolish decisions sometimes, You still have Your angels keeping me from evil. Lead me and guide me, give me Your mercy, grace, and love to get through every battle I face. And let me continue to live my life in a way that brings honor and glory to You so that I can be a faithful witness of Your saving grace. I ask these things in Your name, Jesus. Amen.

God Bless You, I am praying for you,
Christina
