Chapters: Leviticus 1-4
Message: One Sacrifice

Hello My Friend,

The Book of Leviticus contains twenty-seven chapters, the timeline for these events is approximately 1490 B.C. The author of the book is Moses and it was written to Israel. This book was a manual of worship for Israel, it was provided to give them instructions on how a sinner could have fellowship with God. The purpose of the book was to show Israel how to live as a holy nation in fellowship with God and to extend God’s plan of redemption to all nations. What we are to learn from the book is that God only accepts the offerings of those who come to Him voluntary. “If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD.” – Leviticus 1:3.

The first three chapters of the Book of Leviticus explain the offerings that the people were to bring to God in order to be able to fellowship with Him, the offerings were voluntary and set according to a persons wealth, God allowed what they could afford, but He gave specific instructions for each one. The first offering is the burnt (sin) offering, also known as the atonement offering, this would be an unblemished male animal.

If his offering be a burnt sacrifice of the herd, let him offer a male without blemish: he shall offer it of his own voluntary will at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD. And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him. And he shall kill the bullock before the LORD: and the priests, Aaron’s sons, shall bring the blood, and sprinkle the blood round about upon the altar that is by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. And if the burnt sacrifice for his offering to the LORD be of fowls, then he shall bring his offering of turtledoves, or of young pigeons. And the priest shall bring it unto the altar, and wring off his head, and burn it on the altar; and the blood thereof shall be wrung out at the side of the altar: And he shall pluck away his crop with his feathers, and cast it beside the altar on the east part, by the place of the ashes: And he shall cleave it with the wings thereof, but shall not divide it asunder: and the priest shall burn it upon the altar, upon the wood that is upon the fire: it is a burnt sacrifice, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.” – Leviticus 1:3-5,15-17.

and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him.Atonement; Agreement, reconciliation. Sin separates us from God, it literally makes us enemies with Him, and there is only one way to reconcile with Him when we sin, and that is through a blood sacrifice. The blood of lambs, cattle, goats, and birds was never to be a permanent solution, as it could not remove sin, but one sacrifice, one man, makes redemption for all who come to Him willingly, and that is Jesus Christ. “For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins. Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:” – Hebrews 10:4-5.

Oblation; Anything offered or presented in worship to God, an offering, a sacrifice. The meat offering was not the flesh of an animal it was vegetables, flat bread, or crackers, baked or fried in olive oil and spices, this was the only offering offered that was able to enter the tabernacle. It was offered to God as a way to show thanks for the atonement as well as all that God had given them.

And when any will offer a meat offering unto the LORD, his offering shall be of fine flour; and he shall pour oil upon it, and put frankincense thereon: And thou shalt bring the meat offering that is made of these things unto the LORD: and when it is presented unto the priest, he shall bring it unto the altar. And the priest shall take from the meat offering a memorial thereof, and shall burn it upon the altar: it is an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD. And that which is left of the meat offering shall be Aaron’s and his sons’: it is a thing most holy of the offerings of the LORD made by fire. No meat offering, which ye shall bring unto the LORD, shall be made with leaven: for ye shall burn no leaven, nor any honey, in any offering of the LORD made by fire. As for the oblation of the firstfruits, ye shall offer them unto the LORD: but they shall not be burnt on the altar for a sweet savour. And every oblation of thy meat offering shalt thou season with salt; neither shalt thou suffer the salt of the covenant of thy God to be lacking from thy meat offering: with all thine offerings thou shalt offer salt.” – Leviticus 2:1,8-13.

No meat offering, which ye shall bring unto the LORD, shall be made with leaven:Leaven; any kind of agent that makes the flour rise, leaven is a picture of pride, and is the one thing that keeps us from admitting we are sinners. However, if we do not admit we are sinners we can never have fellowship with God. The meat offering represents presenting our bodies as a living sacrifice. “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.” – Romans 12:1.

Next we have the peace offering, it was to be if animal flesh, and could be an unblemished male or female. This was an offering given after the sin and meat offerings for one to be able to fellowship with God.

And if his oblation be a sacrifice of peace offering, if he offer it of the herd; whether it be a male or female, he shall offer it without blemish before the LORD. And he shall lay his hand upon the head of his offering, and kill it at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and Aaron’s sons the priests shall sprinkle the blood upon the altar round about. And he shall offer of the sacrifice of the peace offering an offering made by fire unto the LORD; the fat that covereth the inwards, and all the fat that is upon the inwards, And the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, which is by the flanks, and the caul above the liver, with the kidneys, it shall he take away. And the priest shall burn them upon the altar: it is the food of the offering made by fire for a sweet savour: all the fat is the LORD’S. It shall be a perpetual statute for your generations throughout all your dwellings, that ye eat neither fat nor blood.” – Leviticus 3:1-4,16-17.

that ye eat neither fat nor blood. The fat, the best or richest part of the animal, this as well as the blood, was forbidden for anyone to eat, this was offered solely to God. God would not permit the blood that made atonement to be used as a common thing for them, nor would He allow us. This taught the Jews to observe distinction between common and sacred things, and it kept them separate from idolaters. Today, through Christ, as the Prince of peace, we make peace with God through His blood on the cross. Only through Christ can we have the peace of God through our offering to Him our very best. Now, God gives instructions on how and when they were to offer their sacrifices.

Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a soul shall sin through ignorance against any of the commandments of the LORD concerning things which ought not to be done, and shall do against any of them: If the priest that is anointed do sin according to the sin of the people; then let him bring for his sin, which he hath sinned, a young bullock without blemish unto the LORD for a sin offering. And if the whole congregation of Israel sin through ignorance, and the thing be hid from the eyes of the assembly, and they have done somewhat against any of the commandments of the LORD concerning things which should not be done, and are guilty; When the sin, which they have sinned against it, is known, then the congregation shall offer a young bullock for the sin, and bring him before the tabernacle of the congregation. And the elders of the congregation shall lay their hands upon the head of the bullock before the LORD: and the bullock shall be killed before the LORD.” – Leviticus 42-3,13-15.

If a soul shall sin through ignoranceIgnorance; Absence or destitution of knowledge. None of us are without sin, yes, we who walk with Christ and serve God ought to be following God’s commandments, but we all mess up, we all do stupid things, even out of ignorance, and that does not justify sin. Only through Jesus can we be justified for our sin. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:” – Romans 3:23.

Jesus Christ Magnified: Today, Jesus is revealed through each of the offerings, Jesus became the sacrifice for our atonement, and brings us at peace with God.

Today’s Prayer: God, In a world full of wickedness and corruption it is nice to know that we have a better option, You. You sent Your Son to give us a way to not only fellowship with You, but be with You for eternity. Our sins are what cause us to lose our savor to You. I will never forget what You have done for me, but I know I get weighed down with life that I lose my savor. Lord, I give myself to You as a living sacrifice, all that I have is Yours, do what You will with it, and pour off Your salt on me. I want to be salty, I want to salt everyone that passes me by with Your Son, and be pleasing to You. Show me what to do, keep me looking to You, and help me keep You first about all things. In ask these things in the name of Jesus, Amen.

God Bless You, I am praying for you,

Christina
