Message: Christ’s Gift Of Love

Happy Valentine’s Day! If we were to look into the origins of this holiday we would learn that it was actually a day full of sin to fulfill the lusts of the flesh. Did you know that Easter had the same concept? This is why Baptists celebrate it as Resurrection Day. It is really strange that the majority of holidays in the world had to do with gratifying the flesh, which is why Christians came up with their own Holy Days as a way to move God’s people away from celebrating their flesh, and instead celebrate God. Thankfully, most people do not participate in Valentine’s Day as it originated and instead shower their loved or potential loved ones with gifts to show their love and appreciation for them. Every saved, born again Christian has a Valentine, and He is Jesus Christ. What Jesus showers His loved ones with is His blood, and unlike the flowers, cards, chocolates, balloons, jewelry, and the stuffed animals given that will not last forever, Christ’s gift to us will last forever, and in fact, for an eternity. “But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” – Romans 6:22-23.
“For the wages of sin is death;” From the time of creation, the wages of sin have always been death. Thankfully, God, in all His mercy and grace, has such a great love for mankind that He made a way for those who love Him to pay the price for that death sentence, and that is His Son, Jesus Christ (Genesis 3:15). Before God would send His Son, He made a temporary resolution to this problem. You see, as we learned from the Book of Exodus, since we are all stiffnecked, He will not just save anyone, if we want to be saved from death, we must come to Him, and show Him that we love Him by coming to Him willingly (Exodus 33). Anyone who loved God, came to Him willingly, and if they sinned against Him, they would bring an offering to pay that price. And as we learned yesterday, the same law applied to the priests as well as the royals, rulers, and common people. A soul that sinned through ignorance was not exempt from this, but let me tell you, a soul that sinned knowingly, causing one to sin ignorantly, they had to answer to God for both.
“And if a soul sin, and hear the voice of swearing, and is a witness, whether he hath seen or known of it; if he do not utter it, then he shall bear his iniquity. Or if a soul touch any unclean thing, whether it be a carcase of an unclean beast, or a carcase of unclean cattle, or the carcase of unclean creeping things, and if it be hidden from him; he also shall be unclean, and guilty. Or if he touch the uncleanness of man, whatsoever uncleanness it be that a man shall be defiled withal, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty. Or if a soul swear, pronouncing with his lips to do evil, or to do good, whatsoever it be that a man shall pronounce with an oath, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty in one of these. And it shall be, when he shall be guilty in one of these things, that he shall confess that he hath sinned in that thing:” – Leviticus 5:1-5.
“then he shall bear his iniquity.” And this is exactly why as Christians, we cannot see someone sin through ignorance and not tell them, especially if they are taking God’s name in vain. If God lays it upon our heart to tells someone about Jesus and we do not tell them, then we will have to answer to Him for that. “that he shall confess that he hath sinned in that thing:” We must confess our sin, even though God already knows what we have done, we must come to the acknowledgment that we know we have sinned against Him (Romans 10:9-10). Now, God saw fit to have me show that even though all sin comes with the same price, some are an actual trespass against Him, and therefore, He enforces the trespass offering.
“If a soul commit a trespass, and sin through ignorance, in the holy things of the LORD; then he shall bring for his trespass unto the LORD a ram without blemish out of the flocks, with thy estimation by shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for a trespass offering: And he shall make amends for the harm that he hath done in the holy thing, and shall add the fifth part thereto, and give it unto the priest: and the priest shall make an atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering, and it shall be forgiven him. And if a soul sin, and commit any of these things which are forbidden to be done by the commandments of the LORD; though he wist it not, yet is he guilty, and shall bear his iniquity. And he shall bring a ram without blemish out of the flock, with thy estimation, for a trespass offering, unto the priest: and the priest shall make an atonement for him concerning his ignorance wherein he erred and wist it not, and it shall be forgiven him. It is a trespass offering: he hath certainly trespassed against the LORD.” – Leviticus 5:15-19.
“in the holy things of the LORD;” You know, when we take communion, the entire congregation observes Christ’s death on the cross with unleavened bread and grape juice in observance to Christ’s sinless body and blood offered to pay the wages of our sin. Again, we cannot partake of communion, one; if we are not saved, and two; if there is unrepentant sin in our lives. Those who do will be cut off. “For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.” – I Corinthians 11:26-29.
“with thy estimation,” Saved or not, the wages of sin is death. Think about it, do you actually think that God is going to let one of His people live a life of sin, and then just come up to heaven? We will face judgment in this time of our life for any unrepentant sin. “though he wist it not, yet is he guilty,” It does not matter if the sin was committed through ignorance, once we come to the knowledge of it, we must confess and ask for forgiveness. While Jesus does save us from hell through our faith in Him, we must confess our sin, and repent of it (I John 1:5-10). Of course, once we are saved we are always saved, and are forgiven of our sin, but that does not mean that there is no consequence while we are here. Choosing Christ means that we have to make a commitment, when we are committed to Him we are less likely to fall into sin. The priests were required to have a burnt offering burning day and night, and daily, they had to remove the ashes of the burnt offering and take them off of the property all together.
“Command Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the law of the burnt offering: It is the burnt offering, because of the burning upon the altar all night unto the morning, and the fire of the altar shall be burning in it. And the priest shall put on his linen garment, and his linen breeches shall he put upon his flesh, and take up the ashes which the fire hath consumed with the burnt offering on the altar, and he shall put them beside the altar. And he shall put off his garments, and put on other garments, and carry forth the ashes without the camp unto a clean place. And the fire upon the altar shall be burning in it; it shall not be put out: and the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order upon it; and he shall burn thereon the fat of the peace offerings. The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out.” – Leviticus 6:9-13.
“And he shall put off his garments,” They were to never wear their priestly garments outside of the Tabernacle, but that did not mean they were allowed to live as they pleased while they were outside. “without the camp unto a clean place.” This was an area of the camp that had not been defiled by man, meaning they were cleansed from their sin, and were not to walk into any place that would defile them. “it shall never go out.” The Holy Spirit is the fire within every saved soul, and we are to never let it go out. This is why we find people who were once on fire for God renounce their faith. We cannot have it both ways, we either walk with Christ or we walk in sin, and if we do, we will face consequence for it (I Peter 2:3-8). Just stop to think about what you are doing when you received Christ as Your Saviour, You are taking His flesh and blood upon Your soul. In an interesting contrast, each priest was to offer a meat offering before God, this is a bread offering.
“And this is the law of the meat offering: the sons of Aaron shall offer it before the LORD, before the altar. And he shall take of it his handful, of the flour of the meat offering, and of the oil thereof, and all the frankincense which is upon the meat offering, and shall burn it upon the altar for a sweet savour, even the memorial of it, unto the LORD. And the remainder thereof shall Aaron and his sons eat: with unleavened bread shall it be eaten in the holy place; in the court of the tabernacle of the congregation they shall eat it. It shall not be baken with leaven. I have given it unto them for their portion of my offerings made by fire; it is most holy, as is the sin offering, and as the trespass offering. All the males among the children of Aaron shall eat of it. It shall be a statute for ever in your generations concerning the offerings of the LORD made by fire: every one that toucheth them shall be holy.” – Leviticus 6:14-18.
“And the remainder thereof shall Aaron and his sons eat:” Each and every saved soul are priests, and when we receive Christ as our Saviour, that means, we eat of His body, just as Jesus said we must do if we want to have eternal life (John 6:53). And in addition to the partaking of the bread offering was the trespass offering. “Likewise this is the law of the trespass offering: it is most holy. And the priest shall burn them upon the altar for an offering made by fire unto the LORD: it is a trespass offering. Every male among the priests shall eat thereof: it shall be eaten in the holy place: it is most holy. As the sin offering is, so is the trespass offering: there is one law for them: the priest that maketh atonement therewith shall have it. And the priest that offereth any man’s burnt offering, even the priest shall have to himself the skin of the burnt offering which he hath offered.” – Leviticus 7:1,5-8.
“the priest that maketh atonement therewith shall have it.” The trespass offering was unlike any other offering, and it applied to all, even the holiest of men, it was used to make an atonement, to save a person guilty of sin from the punishment of death. Today, we still need a trespass offering, but thank God He sent His Son to make that way permanent. Not by our own righteousness can we be saved, but by the righteousness and perfect sacrifice of Christ. By the way, this pertains to women as well as men. God loves us so much that He sent His Son to die for us, this Valentine’s Day, give some love back to Jesus by telling someone about Him. “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.” – Romans 5:8-11.
Today’s Prayer: God, You could have very well kept the laws of the Jews in order for us to be reconciled with You and not have to face the punishment of death, but You chose a better, a perfect sacrifice, Your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank You for the greatest sacrifice You made, and for Your mercy and grace, and for Your love to save a sinner like me. I do not deserve Your gift because I know I sin every day, but I know I get to be with You because You see me through the precious blood of Your Son and not my sin. Lord, let me be a witness and give me Your power, wisdom, and guidance to live the life You laid out for me in a way that glorifies You, shows Your love, and brings others to Your Son. I ask this in Your name, Jesus. Amen.
