Study: Delighting In God’s Word

Hello My Friend,

In my Sunday school class, we talked about the Passover, and how the death angel would take every first born if the blood of a lamb was not applied to the doorpost of the house he passed over. The oldest of my brother’s second marriage jumps up and says, “I’m the oldest! I don’t want to die!”. I tell him that I think the same thing whenever I read that because I am the oldest too, but thank God that He sent Jesus and that His blood saves us forever. And this little, hyper, seven year old knows that he is saved because he asked Jesus to come into his heart. It reminds me of something Jesus said about children.

[Matthew 18:3-6  And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.  4  Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.  5  And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.  6  But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.]

A millstone is one of those huge stones that were in the middle of a grinding mill for grains, most of the time animals were used, but they would often prisoners. I do not know about you, but I am sure glad that Jesus is on my side and that I became a child so that I had the opportunity to know the truth and get saved. The only thing that I wish was that I had know the truth sooner, like when I was a teenager and so into Bible study. I love the thought that Jesus protects me and that my enemies quiver at the mention of His name. I also love the fact that I get to read His Word and finally come to an understanding of it. The Word of God is very powerful, it will even convict the devil, but he is too proud and stubborn to give up his dream to be God. Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible, it is separated into eight verse segments using the Hebrew alphabet. The object of the entire Psalm is the Bible, and is a reminder of how important it is to read, study, and follow all of it

[Psalms 119:1-7  ALEPH. Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the LORD.  2  Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.  3  They also do no iniquity: they walk in his ways.  4  Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently.  5  O that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes!  6  Then shall I not be ashamed, when I have respect unto all thy commandments.  7  I will praise thee with uprightness of heart, when I shall have learned thy righteous judgments.]

[Blessed are the undefiled in the way,] The undefiled are the ones whom have been washed in the blood of Christ, no iniquity is found in them because it has been covered with His blood. [1 Corinthians 6:9-11  Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,  10  Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.  11  And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.] Praise God!

Yes, no one is without sin, Christ’s blood covers it all, those who are saved are still sinners, but as they read, learn, and apply God’s Word upon them, they sin less. Just like we need to have a willing and humble heart in order to accept Christ, we also need a willing and humble heart to learn all of His Word and obey it. And this is where a lot of saved, born again Christians falter, they are not willing to give up their sins.

[Psalms 119:27-32  Make me to understand the way of thy precepts: so shall I talk of thy wondrous works.  28  My soul melteth for heaviness: strengthen thou me according unto thy word.  29  Remove from me the way of lying: and grant me thy law graciously.  30  I have chosen the way of truth: thy judgments have I laid before me.  31  I have stuck unto thy testimonies: O LORD, put me not to shame.  32  I will run the way of thy commandments, when thou shalt enlarge my heart.]

[when thou shalt enlarge my heart.] Do you realize that the more blessings you see from God, the larger your heart gets toward Him. And I am not talking about all the superficial things, I am talking about the eternal things that go way down deep inside your true heart. Even when life is challenging and we have no idea what is going on, we find comfort right from His Word, for it is our hope.

[Psalms 119:49-52,59-63  ZAIN. Remember the word unto thy servant, upon which thou hast caused me to hope.  50  This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.  51  The proud have had me greatly in derision: yet have I not declined from thy law.  52  I remembered thy judgments of old, O LORD; and have comforted myself. 59  I thought on my ways, and turned my feet unto thy testimonies.  60  I made haste, and delayed not to keep thy commandments.  61  The bands of the wicked have robbed me: but I have not forgotten thy law.  62  At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee because of thy righteous judgments.  63  I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts.]

[yet have I not declined from thy law.] I will be the first to admit that I have failed God more times than I care to admit in breaking at least one of His commands, I have not declined from His Word, which means to bend downward or from, in other words, I have not turned my heart away from believing that all of it is true and from following it. I also know that there are consequences for sin, but they are what wakes us up.

[Psalms 119:67,71-77  Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word. 71  It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.  72  The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.  73  JOD. Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.  74  They that fear thee will be glad when they see me; because I have hoped in thy word.  75  I know, O LORD, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me.  76  Let, I pray thee, thy merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to thy word unto thy servant.  77  Let thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live: for thy law is my delight.]

[Before I was afflicted I went astray:] All it takes is one bad decision to make a mess of our lives, and it is always when we let our guard down because we got to comfortable. And this is often why God keeps us on our toes so that we do not get too comfortable. We can live by faith in God, but it is His Word that quickens that faith, it is His Word that increases that faith, and it is His Word that gives us hope that He not only hears, but answers us as well. After all, His Word is settled forever in heaven and it can never be moved no matter how many versions they write in their attempts to get rid of the truth.

[Psalms 119:89-94,101-106  LAMED. For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.  90  Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth.  91  They continue this day according to thine ordinances: for all are thy servants.  92  Unless thy law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine affliction.  93  I will never forget thy precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me.  94  I am thine, save me; for I have sought thy precepts. 101  I have refrained my feet from every evil way, that I might keep thy word.  102  I have not departed from thy judgments: for thou hast taught me.  103  How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!  104  Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.  105  NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.  106  I have sworn, and I will perform it, that I will keep thy righteous judgments.]

[Unless thy law had been my delights,] I will tell you, the first book that I read through that I understood was Job, all while I was recovering from an allergic reaction, sitting on my bedroom floor after God screamed at me to get up because He did not bring me here to leave that way. Well, He was not screaming, it was more like an upbraiding, and I can still hear His voice. God’s Word became my delight, otherwise, I would have perished in my affliction. Now, there is not a day that I do not spend in His Word, and if there is, it is the most terrible day. Let me tell you, whenever I mess up, and it is often, the first thing I do is get in God’s Word.

[Psalms 119:127-135  Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold.  128  Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right; and I hate every false way.  129  PE. Thy testimonies are wonderful: therefore doth my soul keep them.  130  The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.  131  I opened my mouth, and panted: for I longed for thy commandments.  132  Look thou upon me, and be merciful unto me, as thou usest to do unto those that love thy name.  133  Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.  134  Deliver me from the oppression of man: so will I keep thy precepts.  135  Make thy face to shine upon thy servant; and teach me thy statutes.]

[Thy testimonies are wonderful: therefore doth my soul keep them.] God knows everything about us, and of course, He knows whether or not our faith is true. We are most effective in our Christian walk when we are not only hearers, but doers of His Word, and while we are no longer under the law of Moses, we can get a lot of insight from it, especially when it comes to understanding God Himself, [2 Timothy 3:16-17  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:  17  That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.]

The more we learn and grow in His Word, the more obedient we become to it. We become wiser, more discerning, and able to recognize the truth from the lies of not only false religion, but those who are not true in their faith. God does not change, we do not keep the Law because it is a requirement to do so, we keep it because He is our salvation. Salvation has nothing to do with good works, but good works after salvation is the best testimony we can give to show the love of God and Christ in us. Stop worrying about what everyone else is doing, focus on you, if everyone focused on what they are supposed to be doing then our nation would not be falling into the abyss of Satan. True Christians have no problem accepting every word to be true or that we are to follow all His commands, not out of obligation, but out of respect.

[Psalms 119:155-156,158-160,164-168  Salvation is far from the wicked: for they seek not thy statutes.  156  Great are thy tender mercies, O LORD: quicken me according to thy judgments.  158  I beheld the transgressors, and was grieved; because they kept not thy word.  159  Consider how I love thy precepts: quicken me, O LORD, according to thy lovingkindness.  160  Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever. 164  Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments.  165  Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.  166  LORD, I have hoped for thy salvation, and done thy commandments.  167  My soul hath kept thy testimonies; and I love them exceedingly.  168  I have kept thy precepts and thy testimonies: for all my ways are before thee.]

[beheld the transgressors, and was grieved;] When we are following the Word of God, we will not be offended by it or anyone who comes to us with accusations or righteous judgment. We are not perfect when we choose to live according to the Word of God, that is what grace is for, but we all need to be more grateful for our salvation and seek to please Him, not because it is required, but because it gives honor and glory to Jesus who saved us from the much deserved hell that He brought us out from.

[1 Peter 4:12-16  Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:  13  But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.  14  If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.  15  But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s matters.  16  Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.]

Today’s Prayer: God, Thank You for Your Word, it really is a lamp to my feet and a light unto my path, when I am sad there is nothing like it to cheer me up, we I cannot see, it shows me the way, when I am fearful, it gives me hope, when I am weary, it is my strength, even when I need correction, it is my conviction. Lord, I want to live in Your Word so I can live the best life here until You bring me home. Lead me and guide me, keep me in Your Word, give me Your power, wisdom, mercy, and grace to keep my heart tender so that I will hide it in my heart and not sin against You. Let me continue to be the Godly testimony that You need me to be to be the light that shines Your Son in this dark world. I ask these things in Your name, Jesus. Amen.
