Message: You Messed Up, Now What?

Hello My Friend,

If there is anything to learn about this whole mess with David and Bathsheba it is this, one, God truly is merciful to His faithful. Two, God knows everything so, it is best to confess sin before things get out of hand, and three, keep yourself busy to avoid falling into temptation in the first place. Sin of any kind spreads like a wildfire if it is not contained, and stopped. You know, temptation can never be avoided, the devil is always lurking about trying to entice our flesh with things, but it can be stopped as long as we keep busy, and stick close to Jesus like glue. Since we have this sin nature, and do not always keep our eyes on Jesus things are bound to happen, so, what do we do? Confess, repent, and turn to Jesus. The first thing, confess our sins to God. “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.” – I John 1:7-10.

If we confess our sins,” People often misinterpret this verse with what is needed for salvation, while we do need to confess that we are sinners as part of our believing in Christ and receiving Him as our Saviour, these verses are addressed to saved, born again believers. Why? We are sinners saved by grace. Salvation does not exempt us from sin, which is why we need to confess our sins daily, and yes, while we may not be living in sin, we do sin daily, and need to confess them daily, hence the need to understand that if we say we have not sinned we deceive ourselves. Remember, before Christ came in the flesh the same rules applied, while the were over six hundred commands in the Law, God never expected them to know and obey them all, but what He did expect was faithfulness, including confessing and seeking redemption of sin. And now. as we come to the story of David and Bathsheba, we find out what happens when we do not keep our eyes on God and ourselves busy.

And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem. And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house. And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.” – II Samuel 11:1-5.

And David sent messengers, and took her;” We can question Bathsheba’s morals here to begin with, but David should have just turned and walked away, he crossed over that line the second he sent for her knowing that she was married, and who her husband was. They are both at fault here, she could have said no when he sent for her, but apparently the thought of spending a night with the king appealed to her. Remember, sin spreads like wildfire, it does not matter how much we cleanse ourselves from our uncleanness, if we do not confess, and address it, it will get out of hand, and things will become much worse. And things did become much worse for David and Bathsheba, now they had a pregnancy to deal with. David knew he messed up, he would not dare go to God and chose to deal with it himself instead, and an innocent man lost his life.

And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set ye Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle, and retire ye from him, that he may be smitten, and die. And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that valiant men were. And the men of the city went out, and fought with Joab: and there fell some of the people of the servants of David; and Uriah the Hittite died also. And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she mourned for her husband. And when the mourning was past, David sent and fetched her to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.” – II Samuel 11:14-17,26-27.

But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.” The thing with dealing with unconfessed sin on your own is that other people get involved, and hurt. Do you think that Joab would respect David any further knowing that he had him set Uriah up? It is never easy confessing sin, but let me tell you, the fall of trying to deal with it on our own is always much worse. While we will never lose our salvation from sin after we are saved, the repercussions of trying to deal with it on our own are devastating. “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” – James 1:12-15.

when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” Death related to sin is rarely a physical death, look what happened with Adam and Eve, they died spiritually, and that was passed down to all of us as a result. Death can include the death of a marriage, a friendship, a relationship, a job or career, or even a business. Things got worse for David as Nathan the prophet comes to him with word from God.

Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife. Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun. For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun. And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.” – II Samuel 12:9-13.

I have sinned against the LORD.” How quickly do we go from commended to convicted once we discover our sin has been found out? Had David just went to God instead of trying to deal with this on his own the man probably would still be alive. And here is the thing also, the Law itself required the death of anyone who committed adultery, by law both David and Bathsheba would have died for their sin. However, God is merciful, and He spared both their lives when David confessed and repented of his sins. So, what do we do if we mess up? One, confess your sin to God, two, repent, meaning, put away the sin, and three, seek God’s help to cleanse you. God used this situation to bring David into deep repentance and remind him that he is a sinner saved by grace.

Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee. For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem. Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.” – Psalm 51:1-4,10-13,16-19.

For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it:” The amazing thing about God is that His mercy never runs out on His people, He forgives us when we confess our sin no matter how many times we mess up, and although we will be accountable for unrepentant sin, that will never take away our salvation. God knows we are going to mess up as long as we have this flesh, and that is why it means more to Him that we come to Him with a broken heart and spirit rather than a sacrifice. Of course, while obedience is better than sacrifice, as long as we humble ourselves before Him, in repentance, He is truly faithful to forgive and cleanse us of all our unrighteousness. “Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy? But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” – James 4:5-10.

Jesus Christ Magnified: “And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah, abide in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do this thing.” – II Samuel 11:11.

Today’s Prayer: God, Your mercy endures forever, no matter what we have done when we confess our sin to You You are always faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us of our unrighteousness, even if that means we have to face some chastisement. Everything You place before us is meant to teach, correct, and guide us out of walking in the flesh, and into Your Spirit. Lord, have mercy and grace on us, give us peace and comfort through our trials as well as any grievances we face, and as we look to You for help and guidance in every matter of our lives, lead us not into temptation, and keep us faithful, and our eyes on You when we are tempted. In Jesus’ name. Amen

God Bless You, I am praying for you,

Christina
