Message: Leviticus: Blessings And Obedience

Hello My Friend,

Blessings come from obeying God’s Word even through the darkest of days, while judgments come from disobeying it. God gives every person a choice, and when we choose Him, He honors that choice and therefore expects our respect in obeying His Word. As we come to the end of the reading of Leviticus, God gives His final instructions on what would become the Law of Moses, He makes clear what He expected of those who chose to follow Him. He outlines the blessings that would accompany obedience, as well as the curses that would follow if they turned against Him. He begins by reiterating that they were to make no idols or carved images to worship.

[Leviticus 26:1-5  Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God.  2  Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the LORD.  3  If ye walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them;  4  Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. 5  And your threshing shall reach unto the vintage, and the vintage shall reach unto the sowing time: and ye shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely.]

When God sends blessings, they often come in the form of provision, peace, and protection over our homes and even our nations. These blessings do not benefit His people only; they benefit the world around them as well. Even those who are not Christians will come to acknowledge and respect the blessing because they know it came from their faith in God, [Matthew 5:44-45  But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;  45  That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.]

God promises Israel that if they remain obedient, their harvests will be abundant and they will be kept safe from the attacks of their enemies. Does God expect us to live without ever failing? No. He knows our weaknesses, but He does expect us to remain loyal, repentant, and faithful. With this in mind, God begins to list the blessings that would come upon them if they chose to walk in obedience, first and farmost, peace.

[Leviticus 26:6,9-13  And I will give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid: and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land. 9  For I will have respect unto you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and establish my covenant with you.  10  And ye shall eat old store, and bring forth the old because of the new.  11  And I will set my tabernacle among you: and my soul shall not abhor you.  12  And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people.  13  I am the LORD your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, that ye should not be their bondmen; and I have broken the bands of your yoke, and made you go upright.]

What better reason is there to be obedient to God than to have His peace, His favor, and His presence, and to know that He walks with us, protects us, and claims us as His very own? If we are going to do anything for God, then we ought to honor Him by first receiving His Son as our Saviour, followed by believers’ baptism. Without Christ there is no life beyond this life, for He alone is the One who gives eternal life to all who come to Him in faith, [John 15:4-5  Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.  5  I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.]

I am not going to lie, I know I fail God every day, and at times I feel like I am among the weakest Christians. Yet I remain loyal, faithful, and striving to be repentant, and that actually does count for something. What He does not want is for us to ignore His Word, for He sees that as despising it, and anyone who does so places themselves in danger of judgment. God goes on to warn them of what will happen if they despise His Word.

[Leviticus 26:15-19  And if ye shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but that ye break my covenant:  16  I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of heart: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.  17  And I will set my face against you, and ye shall be slain before your enemies: they that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you.  18  And if ye will not yet for all this hearken unto me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins.  19  And I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass:]

Think about it: if they turned against Him, they would be punished seven times more for their sins. Let me tell you, even at our best we are going to fail God thousands of times. Yet we must understand that this is not about the ordinary sins that come from our fallen nature. What God is addressing here is a complete disregard for His Word while still expecting His blessings. Walking with God is a transforming journey as we learn His ways and follow them. If we are not being transformed, then it is clear that something in our walk is not aligned with Him. God repeats this warning several times, making it clear that He is serious.

[Leviticus 26:21-25  And if ye walk contrary unto me, and will not hearken unto me; I will bring seven times more plagues upon you according to your sins.  22  I will also send wild beasts among you, which shall rob you of your children, and destroy your cattle, and make you few in number; and your high ways shall be desolate.  23  And if ye will not be reformed by me by these things, but will walk contrary unto me;  24  Then will I also walk contrary unto you, and will punish you yet seven times for your sins.  25  And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your cities, I will send the pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy.]

The land that had once been called “the glory of all lands” for its fruitfulness would, because of their sins, become barren. Everything they trusted in, whether civil or religious, everything they took pride in and depended upon for safety, would be shattered to pieces and prove utterly useless to them. Why was God being so harsh? They had not even been out of Egypt for three months before they crafted a golden calf. If that was how quickly they turned aside, imagine what they would fall into next, idol worship, sacrificing their own children to false gods, and immoral behavior beyond anything we could imagine. God knew exactly where their rebellion would lead, and foretells of some of the grimmest events that would come upon them.

[Leviticus 26:27-31  And if ye will not for all this hearken unto me, but walk contrary unto me;  28  Then I will walk contrary unto you also in fury; and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins.  29  And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat.  30  And I will destroy your high places, and cut down your images, and cast your carcases upon the carcases of your idols, and my soul shall abhor you.  31  And I will make your cities waste, and bring your sanctuaries unto desolation, and I will not smell the savour of your sweet odours.]

[Contrary; Opposite; contradictory; not merely different, but inconsistent.] Did you ever feel like you were working so hard yet have nothing to show for it? That is exactly what it feels like when those who are saved choose not to walk in obedience to God. Unless what we do is for the glory of God, it is contrary to His Word and we will never be satisfied with anything we gain, and slowly lose more and more of the blessings. In fact, we may just lose them all together. God goes on to foretell of how He would scatter them to give the land rest.

[Leviticus 26:33-37  And I will scatter you among the heathen, and will draw out a sword after you: and your land shall be desolate, and your cities waste.  34  Then shall the land enjoy her sabbaths, as long as it lieth desolate, and ye be in your enemies’ land; even then shall the land rest, and enjoy her sabbaths.  35  As long as it lieth desolate it shall rest; because it did not rest in your sabbaths, when ye dwelt upon it.  36  And upon them that are left alive of you I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth.  37  And they shall fall one upon another, as it were before a sword, when none pursueth: and ye shall have no power to stand before your enemies.]

The rest would be the long payment due of sabbatical years that had accumulated through their apostasy, who had deprived their land of its appointed seasons of rest. The number of those neglected sabbatical years appears to have been seventy, as reflected in the duration of their captivity. This early prediction is remarkable. God ensured that the land would finally enjoy the rest it had been denied, even if it meant removing the people who refused to honor His command. However, even in the midst of all these warnings, God offers a glimmer of hope. He tells them that when they turn against Him and He allows them to waste away in their sin, He will still be there for anyone who comes to Him in repentance.

[Leviticus 26:40,42,44-45  If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me;  42  Then will I remember my covenant with Jacob, and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember; and I will remember the land. 44  And yet for all that, when they be in the land of their enemies, I will not cast them away, neither will I abhor them, to destroy them utterly, and to break my covenant with them: for I am the LORD their God.  45  But I will for their sakes remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the heathen, that I might be their God: I am the LORD.]

As soon as I read this what came to mind was just how slow to anger and merciful God is. His judgment may fall on the unrepentant, but His mercy is always extended to the one who humbles themselves and returns to Him. Do you see why no saved, born again Christian can lose their salvation? It has nothing to do with our own righteousness and everything to do with the promise that God made with those who trust Him, [Ephesians 2:8-10  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:  9  Not of works, lest any man should boast.  10  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.]

Nations that keep God in them are protected by God Himself, and let me tell you, the reason why American soil is not being attacked right now is because there are many Christians defending their faith. When we choose Christ, we enter into a vow with Him, promising to trust in Him alone for our salvation. In turn, He promises to keep us from hell and to secure for us all the blessings that come with being His. God actually places value on what we devote to Him, our faith, our obedience, our loyalty, and our willingness to walk in His ways.

[Leviticus 27:2-5  Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When a man shall make a singular vow, the persons shall be for the LORD by thy estimation.  3  And thy estimation shall be of the male from twenty years old even unto sixty years old, even thy estimation shall be fifty shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary.  4  And if it be a female, then thy estimation shall be thirty shekels. 5  And if it be from five years old even unto twenty years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male twenty shekels, and for the female ten shekels.]

This refers to an exceptional and unusual vow made to the Lord, a special promise in which a person offered themselves to God for some form of service in His worship. Redemption from the obligations of such a vow had to be made according to the valuation first given by Moses and later confirmed by the priest in charge. The fulfillment of the vow consisted in this: the individual paid the appointed price of the estimation to the Sanctuary, thereby honoring the promise made to the Lord, and this included infants, toddlers, and the elderly.

[Leviticus 27:6-8  And if it be from a month old even unto five years old, then thy estimation shall be of the male five shekels of silver, and for the female thy estimation shall be three shekels of silver.  7  And if it be from sixty years old and above; if it be a male, then thy estimation shall be fifteen shekels, and for the female ten shekels.  8  But if he be poorer than thy estimation, then he shall present himself before the priest, and the priest shall value him; according to his ability that vowed shall the priest value him.]

Think about it: if everything we are blessed with, including our spouses, our children, and every other person in our lives, is a gift from God, then it only makes sense to dedicate it all back to Him. What He gives is entrusted to us, and honoring Him with those blessings is both an act of gratitude and an acknowledgment that He alone is the source of every good gift. Yet if a person could not afford to pay the amount requested, the priest would determine the appropriate price for fulfilling the vow. Why was all this even necessary? God wanted His people to understand the seriousness of making a vow to Him, [Ecclesiastes 5:4-5  When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed.  5  Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.]

By establishing a clear valuation system, God ensured that every vow carried weight, accountability, and honor. It prevented people from making reckless promises and then walking away from them, and it provided a fair and orderly way for a person to fulfill or redeem their vow without disrespecting the holiness of the commitment. This special ordinance made it possible even for the very poor to dedicate themselves to the Lord. However, this was not limited to personal vows, it also included their possessions.

[Leviticus 27:14-17  And when a man shall sanctify his house to be holy unto the LORD, then the priest shall estimate it, whether it be good or bad: as the priest shall estimate it, so shall it stand.  15  And if he that sanctified it will redeem his house, then he shall add the fifth part of the money of thy estimation unto it, and it shall be his.  16  And if a man shall sanctify unto the LORD some part of a field of his possession, then thy estimation shall be according to the seed thereof: an homer of barley seed shall be valued at fifty shekels of silver.  17  If he sanctify his field from the year of jubile, according to thy estimation it shall stand.]

Our houses, lands, provisions, and all our possessions must be used for the glory of God. It is pleasing to Him when a portion is given to support His worship and to advance His work. He expects generosity, but not recklessness; devotion, but not neglect of the responsibilities He has entrusted to us. And by the way, if we belong to God, then everything we possess belongs to Him as well, and therefore we must present it to Him as holy. God goes on to say that even their homes and their land were to be considered holy, set apart for His purposes and used in a way that honored Him.

[Leviticus 27:19-23  And if he that sanctified the field will in any wise redeem it, then he shall add the fifth part of the money of thy estimation unto it, and it shall be assured to him.  20  And if he will not redeem the field, or if he have sold the field to another man, it shall not be redeemed any more.  21  But the field, when it goeth out in the jubile, shall be holy unto the LORD, as a field devoted; the possession thereof shall be the priest’s.  22  And if a man sanctify unto the LORD a field which he hath bought, which is not of the fields of his possession;  23  Then the priest shall reckon unto him the worth of thy estimation, even unto the year of the jubile: and he shall give thine estimation in that day, as a holy thing unto the LORD.]

The priest was to estimate the field that had been dedicated to the Lord and set a value upon it according to his best judgment. This valuation was then given to the person who had sanctified the field, or to anyone who wished to redeem it. The estimate was based on the number of years remaining until the year of jubilee. Unlike other valuations, no additional fifth part was added, because the redemption price itself was designated for sacred purposes, specifically for the maintenance of the Temple, to which the purchase money was devoted. God does not expect us to give up everything we have, although be willing to, but He does expect us to be faithful and give our very best,

[Leviticus 27:28-32  Notwithstanding no devoted thing, that a man shall devote unto the LORD of all that he hath, both of man and beast, and of the field of his possession, shall be sold or redeemed: every devoted thing is most holy unto the LORD.  29  None devoted, which shall be devoted of men, shall be redeemed; but shall surely be put to death.  30  And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD’S: it is holy unto the LORD.  31  And if a man will at all redeem ought of his tithes, he shall add thereto the fifth part thereof.  32  And concerning the tithe of the herd, or of the flock, even of whatsoever passeth under the rod, the tenth shall be holy unto the LORD.]

Things or persons that were devoted to the Lord were distinct from those that were merely sanctified. Devoted things were considered most holy to the Lord and could neither be reclaimed nor used for any other purpose. Whatever increase or produce came from them, God was to be honored with the tenth, whenever it could be applied. In this way, the people acknowledged God as the true Owner of their land, the Giver of its fruits, and themselves as His tenants and dependents. By offering these tithes, they expressed gratitude for the abundance they enjoyed and sought His continued favor. From this we are taught to honor the Lord with our substance.

[II Corinthians 9:7-10  Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.  8  And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:  9  (As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever.  10  Now he that ministereth seed to the sower both minister bread for your food, and multiply your seed sown, and increase the fruits of your righteousness;)]

Today’s Prayer: God, It is because of the great love of Your Son, Jesus, and His willingness to take on our sins to redeem us that we can receive eternal life through our faith in Him. It is truly amazing, the love You have for me and every soul, when I was lost, broken, and without hope, You found me, You took me in, accepted me, and made me one of Your own. I know I am not always in Your will, and I know I mess up every day but You are faithful and just to forgive me when I confess my sins to You. Lord, lead me and guide me in, give me an obedient heart that I might live a life that will bring honor and glory to You and Your respect. I ask these things in Your name, Jesus. Amen.

God Bless You, I am praying for you,
Christina
