Message: What You Should Understand

Hello My Friend,

I use to think that whenever I get pulled into doing something else when I am spending time with God that it was just my flesh. While that may be the case at times, as I began reading the Proverbs today I realized something, distractions are not necessarily distractions to pull us away from God, they are to bring us closer to Him. For instance, when I start to praying for God to bless me with an extra job and then start looking at job listings, I am not being distracted away from Him, I am asking Him to show me what to apply for. You see, our time with God really is not about spending an hour or so before we start our day, it is about spending the entire day with Him. The more time we spend with Him the more we come to understand His ways, as to understand His ways, and apply them to our lives is what leads others to Jesus Christ. “But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel;” – Philippians 1:12.

But I would ye should understand,” Understand; To have the same ideas as the person who speaks, or ideas which a person intends to communicate. The things we go through, whether good or bad, are used to give us a better understanding of God. While trials bring us to seek Him more, blessings keep us faithful. And what better way to know God’s ideas for us, and to communicate them to us than through His Word. The Book of Proverbs contains thirty-one chapters, all, but two, are penned down by Solomon in the early days of his reign, around 995 to 990 BC. The book was written to the Jews, and is addressed to all believers. The purpose of the book is to teach wisdom, instruction, and correction to all who fear God. What we are to learn from it is that it is God who teaches us His wisdom, instruction, and correction so that we can live a prosperous life through Him. If we honestly and truly want God to be a part of our lives then we get in His Word, study it, and apply it to our lives.

A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.” – Proverbs 1:5-7,27-33.

and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: To understand a proverb,” Attain; To gain; to compass; to achieve or accomplish, that is, to reach by efforts. Our goal in reading God’s Word has nothing to do with understanding His existence, it has everything to do with understanding Him personally. We first have to believe that His Word is true, and if we believe that His Word is true, we understand that we truly need Jesus in order for us to attain the knowledge necessary to get saved. The wisest decision we will ever make is receiving Christ as our Saviour, once we do that, and with a willing heart, start reading His Word, we will begin to hear what He is saying to us, and increase our learning as the Holy Spirit directs us. Those who reject that the Word of God is true are fools, and will have no one, but themselves to blame for their destruction. “Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.” – Proverbs 1:31.

and be filled with their own devices. This verse sounds very familiar to what Paul was saying in the Book of Romans when spoke of God giving them up to their reprobate minds (See Romans I:26-28). People think the Old Testament does not apply today, but fail to understand that it is the very same thing we are taught in the New Testament. In fact, we can lead someone to Christ through Scripture only in the Old Testament, and I will have to make an appoint to do this as God is advising me to do so now. When you first begin reading the Proverbs they seem like a bunch of sentences jumbled together, as if Solomon just wrote down his thoughts, but as you begin to hear what you are reading you realize it is not Solomon speaking at all. Do you remember when God told David that Solomon would be like a son to Him? (See II Samuel 7:12-6). This is God speaking, and He is not just telling this to Solomon, He is speaking to all His children. Let me tell you, God, our Father, did not give His Word to everyone, He gave it to His children so they will be educated and trained in understanding His ways.

My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints. Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.” – Proverbs 2:1-2,5-9.

and apply thine heart to understanding; It all begins with the heart. There are many who believe (because they misinterpret His Word) that God chooses who gets saved before they are even conceived. Do you not realize that if God could He would save Satan? Why? Eternal death. God does not want to see any of His creation burning in torture for eternity, but that was their choice. Jesus died to save every soul, but only saves those who apply their heart to the understanding that He is the only way, the only truth, and the only life. While angels do not have souls, they do have freewill, and face hell too for their pride. Yes, it is pride that changes our heart from fearing to forgetting God. Does God know which way a heart will turn? Of course. That does not mean He only created a certain number of souls to be saved, it means He gives us all choices, and those choices have consequences. For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished: But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.” – II Peter 2:4,9-10.

they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.Do you see how easy it is for the world to be open and honest about sin today? The entire month of June has been designated as pride month. And let me tell you, the people who participate in this type of activity are not the most dignified people. People do not just fall into sin overnight, and they are certainly not born with the knowledge know how to do those things. We are taught, and it does not matter what sin we get caught up in, we are introduced and indoctrinated into it first. And this is exactly why spending time with God must be all day long, and not just in the wee hours of the morning or before we go to bed. And we need to be grounded in the Word of God, just reading the Bible one time through is not going to cut it, it needs to be constant, and it needs to be applied, we need to be walking, talking, Bibles ourselves.

Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man. Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine. My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.” – Proverbs 3:3-12.

and lean not unto thine own understanding.Leaning on our own understanding is what gets us in trouble to begin with. Do you know how many times thoughts of my past come flooding back when I pray? Almost daily. No, I do not dwell on them, they are reminders of where leaning on my own understanding took me, and what Jesus did to turn it around. God loves us way too much to see us making one bad decision after another because we are not grounded in His Word. It is only when we turn to Him, and get in His Word that we learn His ways, fear Him, then let Him direct us in His ways. The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens. By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew. My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion: So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck. Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble. When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet. Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh. For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.” – Proverbs 3:19-26.

by understanding hath he established the heavens. As I said earlier, we born with the knowledge of God in us, but that gets changed by what we are taught. We are not always going to understand God’s ways, but we can learn to understand that all things work together for good to them who love God.And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.” – Romans 8:28-30.

Jesus Christ Magnified: “The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just. Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly.” – Proverbs 3:33-34.

Today’s Prayer: God, Thankfully You are full of mercy and truth to not only help us when we make bad decisions in our own understanding, but guide us in Yours. Thank You for Your wisdom and showing us how to take the knowledge You gave us and use it for Your glory. We may not always understand Your Word, but when we take the time to study it, receive it, and obey it, You will make us wiser and respectable to those around us. Lord, Lead us and guide us in Your mercies and truth, fill us with Your wisdom, Your strength to not lean on our own understanding, but Yours, and ope our hearts to be receptacle to everything You teach us. Direct our paths and show Yourself mighty in our lives for all to see. I ask these things in Your name, Jesus. Amen.

God Bless You, I am praying for you,

Christina
