Message: Jesus And His Bride

Hello My Friend,

I am going to be honest and tell you that Song of Solomon is not one of my favorite books of the Bible, this is mainly due to the fact that I am not married and this entire book describes the intimate relationship of a husband and wife. Before I begin reading His Word, I ask God to open my eyes to something new, and remind me of something old. Well, God did not disappoint, He definitely reminded me that this love story goes beyond a marriage between a man and woman, it describes our marriage with Jesus the second we receive Him as our Saviour. God also taught me something new, while we can put a strain on our marriage, Jesus remains faithful, with all our shortcomings and pitfalls, nothing can separate us from His love. “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 8:35,38-39.

“shall be able to separate us from the love of God,” Our faith alone in Christ does wonders for us, well beyond our being saved from death, and hell. We can and do tend to neglect God more than we care to admit, yet His love for us never diminishes because of our faith in His Son. Amen! The Book of Song of Solomon contains eight chapters, the author is Solomon, and it is written to his bride and to all believers, and was written about 1014 BC. The purpose of the book is to show the intimate relationship between Jesus and the Church as demonstrated by the intimate relationship between a husband and wife. What we are to learn from the book is that the divine model of love between husband and wife is the pattern for our relationship between our beloved Christ and His Bride (the Church). The chapter begins with the bride describing her love for her beloved, but she neglected him, and now pleads with him what she might be able to do to reconcile with him.

“The song of songs, which is Solomon’s. Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine. Because of the savour of thy good ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love thee. Draw me, we will run after thee: the king hath brought me into his chambers: we will be glad and rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love more than wine: the upright love thee. I am black, but comely, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, as the tents of Kedar, as the curtains of Solomon. Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother’s children were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but mine own vineyard have I not kept. Tell me, O thou whom my soul loveth, where thou feedest, where thou makest thy flock to rest at noon: for why should I be as one that turneth aside by the flocks of thy companions? If thou know not, O thou fairest among women, go thy way forth by the footsteps of the flock, and feed thy kids beside the shepherds’ tents.” – Song of Solomon 1:1-8.

“but mine own vineyard have I not kept.” We are all guilty of this, we get so busy with life that we neglect that intimacy that Jesus longs for. And serving Him is not the same thing as spending time with Him, just like every married couple needs daily alone time to reconnect, we need the same thing with Jesus. The problem is, we take on way too much by ourselves, we think we are capable of taking care of everyone’s needs and still our own, but we cannot, and end up neglecting ourselves, and Him in the process. Jesus knows we are tired and worn out from the day, but if we take time each day to spend some quality time with Him we will find we can do all things through Christ. “I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” – Philippians 4:12-13.

“both to abound and to suffer need.” Remember, faith without works is dead, we need to balance our relationship with Christ, we must be willing to do what we are capable of in our flesh, yet never become so independent that we stop depending on Him. I know this sounds like a contradiction, but we must realize that Christ is our strength, He is the one who gives us the physical, mental, and spiritual strength to do our part in this spiritual marriage. The lily of the valley flower, is known for its tiny pure white, bell-shaped flowers and unforgettable sweet fragrance. Its beauty and fragrance foreshadow Jesus Christ, in this chapter special attention is given to the lily of the valley, and also a special rose, if you listen to the passage you will discover that this is Jesus Himself.

“I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys. As the lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters. As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste. He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love. The voice of my beloved! behold, he cometh leaping upon the mountains, skipping upon the hills. O my dove, that art in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs, let me see thy countenance, let me hear thy voice; for sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance is comely. My beloved is mine, and I am his: he feedeth among the lilies. Until the day break, and the shadows flee away, turn, my beloved, and be thou like a roe or a young hart upon the mountains of Bether.” – Song of Solomon 2:1-4,8,14,16-17.

“and his banner over me was love.” Banner; Flag. Christ’s flag over us is His blood. His love for us was so grand that He gave His life, His blood was shed for us. His love for us is so amazing that He never stops looking for us. And once He does find us, He takes us into His loving arms, and through our faith in Him, He holds on to us forever. We may tend to neglect Him from time to time, but He is always calling out to us, and when we open our heart to Him, that is when we will hear His voice, and it is the sweetest sound we will ever hear. “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand. I and my Father are one.” – John 10:27-30.

“I and my Father are one.” How awesome is this? Since Jesus and God are one, that means we are one with Him also. There is nothing we can do that He will leave us, He may send us some tough love to get us to see that we have been neglecting Him, but nothing and no one can pluck us out of His hand. Now, this can also be a little intimidating once we realize that God is one with us. And let me tell you, a relationship with Christ certainly does get you thinking about the way you are living, and will keep you from doing things that are questionable as long as you are not neglecting Him. You see, those who get saved and just live their lives as they please, without concern for Jesus, are no different than one who is cheating on their spouse. And when we have been betrayed we feel angry, ashamed, and rejected. This is how Jesus feels when He is betrayed, His may not leave them, but He distances Himself from them until they repent, and return to Him. In this chapter, the bride has lost contact with her beloved, she searches for him diligently until she found him.

“By night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not. I will rise now, and go about the city in the streets, and in the broad ways I will seek him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not. The watchmen that go about the city found me: to whom I said, Saw ye him whom my soul loveth? It was but a little that I passed from them, but I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go, until I had brought him into my mother’s house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me. I charge you, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, by the roes, and by the hinds of the field, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please. Who is this that cometh out of the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all powders of the merchant? Behold his bed, which is Solomon’s; threescore valiant men are about it, of the valiant of Israel.” – Song of Solomon 3:1-7.

“but I found him not.” How long do those who cheat on Jesus expect him to sit there and watch them doing so without consequence. No, He never leaves us, but He will distance Himself from them, and His protection and presence will diminish while they are living in sin. It is not until one repents, and seeks Him with their whole heart that they will find Him again, and He will return to them with open arms.

“Come with me from Lebanon, my spouse, with me from Lebanon: look from the top of Amana, from the top of Shenir and Hermon, from the lions’ dens, from the mountains of the leopards. Thou hast ravished my heart, my sister, my spouse; thou hast ravished my heart with one of thine eyes, with one chain of thy neck. How fair is thy love, my sister, my spouse! how much better is thy love than wine! and the smell of thine ointments than all spices! A fountain of gardens, a well of living waters, and streams from Lebanon. Awake, O north wind; and come, thou south; blow upon my garden, that the spices thereof may flow out. Let my beloved come into his garden, and eat his pleasant fruits.” – Song of Solomon 4:8-18,15-16.

“a well of living waters,” Jesus is our well of living water, and this is why we need to make sure that our beloved gets the attention He deserves. We need Him just as much as we need water to survive, without Him we will die. So, walk with Him, talk with Him, confide in Him, listen to Him, obey Him, treat Him like He is right there in front of you. And you will never even thirst for anything the world offers because you will be overflowing in His living water. “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” – John 4:14. Amen!

Jesus Christ Magnified: “I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys. My beloved is mine, and I am his: he feedeth among the lilies.” – Song of Solomon 2:1,16.

Today’s Prayer: God, You long to have a one on one relationship with us, one that is full of faith, trust, and honor, just as a husband and wife do when they vow to be one. While nothing is sure in life, one thing is sure, nothing can separate us from You. We may find some dark pathways, but You will always shine the Light to bring us back home. Lord, give me Your power to know You and love You with all my soul, heart, and mind. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
