Message: Song of Solomon: The Grooms Unconditional Love
Hello My Friend,
As we come to the end of the reading of Song of Solomon we learn that even the strongest Christian, while their feet do not move from their faith in Christ, messes up a time or two, or maybe a few. However, their faith is what sustains them, [1 John 2:1-2 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.]
[Propitiation; The act of appeasing wrath and conciliating the favor of an offended person; the atonement or atoning sacrifice offered to God to assuage his wrath and render him propitious (favorable) to sinners.] King Solomon, had a thousand wives and while there is really no mention of how many he actually loved, the one he describes here is the love of his life and like no other. Near the end of his life he finally understood that the best relationship to be in was with God, [Ecclesiastes 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.]
The best description of Christ being the propitiation of our sins is actually found in Song of Solomon. Yesterday we learned of the bride searching for her groom and how he describes his love for his bride. Today, we learn that he is knocking at her door, but she delay’s in getting up and answering it.
[Song of Solomon 5:1-4 I am come into my garden, my sister, my spouse: I have gathered my myrrh with my spice; I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk: eat, O friends; drink, yea, drink abundantly, O beloved. 2 I sleep, but my heart waketh: it is the voice of my beloved that knocketh, saying, Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled: for my head is filled with dew, and my locks with the drops of the night. 3 I have put off my coat; how shall I put it on? I have washed my feet; how shall I defile them? 4 My beloved put in his hand by the hole of the door, and my bowels were moved for him.]
The groom filled himself with the spiritual foods for healing the spirit represented by the honeycomb and honey, and the body represented by the wine with milk. Jesus, our beloved Physician, first, anoints us with His blood the second that we accept Him as our Saviour, giving life to our dead soul, then heals us from the inside out by becoming food for our spirit, [Luke 5:31-32 And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. 32 I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.]
Jesus, is always knocking at the door of His beloved, all souls are His beloved, but the only ones that He opens Himself up to are those who open the door of their heart to Him. The thing about Jesus is that He knows where He is wanted, and He will only come in to those who sincerely open the door for Him, [Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.]
Have you ever been suddenly awaken out of your sleep, and it takes a few minutes to recollect yourself? This is how the woman was feeling, but by the time she figured out that it was her beloved knocking at the door and answered it he had already left.
[Song of Solomon 5:5-7 I rose up to open to my beloved; and my hands dropped with myrrh, and my fingers with sweet smelling myrrh, upon the handles of the lock. 6 I opened to my beloved; but my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone: my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer. 7 The watchmen that went about the city found me, they smote me, they wounded me; the keepers of the walls took away my veil from me.]
This is an illustration of those who have every intention of getting saved, but thought that they had time, then lost the opportunity and died in their sin. It does not matter if we intended to open the door, unless we open it, Jesus will not come in. Why? He does not force Himself on anyone, [Romans 10:9-10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.]
Not only did they beat her up they took her veil away, which was the biggest insult that any bride could receive as taking away her veil shamed her and made her look like she was defiled. Think about it, until we come to Christ we are defiled as we are covered in the filth of sin and since we are defiled of course we are going to be stripped of salvation. However, once we understand that He is the only one who can clean us up, that is when we start sincerely searching for Him. Now, the bride goes on to search for her beloved and goes on to describe her love for him.
[Song of Solomon 5:8-10,16 I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, if ye find my beloved, that ye tell him, that I am sick of love. 9 What is thy beloved more than another beloved, O thou fairest among women? what is thy beloved more than another beloved, that thou dost so charge us? 10 My beloved is white and ruddy, the chiefest among ten thousand. 16 His mouth is most sweet: yea, he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.]
The love that one has for Christ supersedes any love that they will ever have with anyone else because it is not the kind of love that we would have for a spouse, child, friend, or anyone else that we love. This kind of love is the agape kind of love that will even go as far as to forgive those who wronged us, [2 Corinthians 2:9-10 For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things. 10 To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ;]
There is only one way to eternal life, and that is Jesus Christ, sadly, very few come to Him, but when they do, it is an amazing discovery. Now, as the bride continues to search for her groom, she discovers that he has been searching for her.
[Song of Solomon 6:1-6 Whither is thy beloved gone, O thou fairest among women? whither is thy beloved turned aside? that we may seek him with thee. 2 My beloved is gone down into his garden, to the beds of spices, to feed in the gardens, and to gather lilies. 3 I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine: he feedeth among the lilies. 4 Thou art beautiful, O my love, as Tirzah, comely as Jerusalem, terrible as an army with banners. 5 Turn away thine eyes from me, for they have overcome me: thy hair is as a flock of goats that appear from Gilead. 6 Thy teeth are as a flock of sheep which go up from the washing, whereof every one beareth twins, and there is not one barren among them.]
When she finds her beloved she discovers something amazing, even though he has he has hundreds of wives, he loves her as though she were his only one. It does not matter how many times we fail Christ, it does not matter how many souls come to Him, He knows each and every one of us individually and loves us just the same. Watch as the groom goes on to describe his beloved.
[Song of Solomon 6:9-13 My dove, my undefiled is but one; she is the only one of her mother, she is the choice one of her that bare her. The daughters saw her, and blessed her; yea, the queens and the concubines, and they praised her. 10 Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners? 11 I went down into the garden of nuts to see the fruits of the valley, and to see whether the vine flourished, and the pomegranates budded. 12 Or ever I was aware, my soul made me like the chariots of Amminadib. 13 Return, return, O Shulamite; return, return, that we may look upon thee. What will ye see in the Shulamite? As it were the company of two armies.]
Wow! Think about it, the second that we receive Christ as our Saviour we not only become undefiled, we also become one among the other sisters and brothers in Christ. Together, we form the body of Christ, and each and every one of us, from the strongest to the weakest are just as valuable to Him, [1 Corinthians 12:12-13 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.]
Once we receive Christ as our Saviour our souls are one with Him together for eternity, which is why when one falls and suffers we all suffer. This Shulamite is referring to the Church, and quite a few have neglected Jesus, He does not expect us to be perfect in the sense that we are relying on our own righteousness to save us, He does expect us to have a perfect heart toward Him in that we love Him as He loves us. Watch how the groom describes his beloved and how much he delights in her.
[Song of Solomon 7:1-6 How beautiful are thy feet with shoes, O prince’s daughter! the joints of thy thighs are like jewels, the work of the hands of a cunning workman. 2 Thy navel is like a round goblet, which wanteth not liquor: thy belly is like an heap of wheat set about with lilies. 3 Thy two breasts are like two young roes that are twins. 4 Thy neck is as a tower of ivory; thine eyes like the fishpools in Heshbon, by the gate of Bath-rabbim: thy nose is as the tower of Lebanon which looketh toward Damascus. 5 Thine head upon thee is like Carmel, and the hair of thine head like purple; the king is held in the galleries. 6 How fair and how pleasant art thou, O love, for delights!]
This may perhaps be the oddest description of a man describing the physical attraction that he has for his beloved, but do you realize that each and every part of our body is important to God, even the hairs on our head that fell off? [Luke 12:6-7 Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? 7 But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.]
Jesus, delights in His bride, even though we mess up a thousand times over and that means all of us. We are His beloved and His desire is that we live our best lives through Him. Jesus, only wants the best for us, He gave His life for us, He shed His blood so that we may be able to live eternally with Him. Of course, He desires for us to trust solely upon Him for our salvation, but He desires even more than that, He desires for us to love Him with the same love that He has for us.
[Song of Solomon 7:8-13 I said, I will go up to the palm tree, I will take hold of the boughs thereof: now also thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine, and the smell of thy nose like apples; 9 And the roof of thy mouth like the best wine for my beloved, that goeth down sweetly, causing the lips of those that are asleep to speak. 10 I am my beloved’s, and his desire is toward me. 11 Come, my beloved, let us go forth into the field; let us lodge in the villages. 12 Let us get up early to the vineyards; let us see if the vine flourish, whether the tender grape appear, and the pomegranates bud forth: there will I give thee my loves. 13 The mandrakes give a smell, and at our gates are all manner of pleasant fruits, new and old, which I have laid up for thee, O my beloved.]
Jesus, did not save us so that we can live a sinful life, He saved us so that we can live an abundant life. If we choose to love something else more than Him He will get jealous. Now, watch as the bride starts getting jealous when she sees other women around her beloved.
[Song of Solomon 8:1-5 O that thou wert as my brother, that sucked the breasts of my mother! when I should find thee without, I would kiss thee; yea, I should not be despised. 2 I would lead thee, and bring thee into my mother’s house, who would instruct me: I would cause thee to drink of spiced wine of the juice of my pomegranate. 3 His left hand should be under my head, and his right hand should embrace me. 4 I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, until he please. 5 Who is this that cometh up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved? I raised thee up under the apple tree: there thy mother brought thee forth: there she brought thee forth that bare thee.]
God, is a jealous God, and will not share Himself with anything else that takes up our time. If we love something more than Him then He will feel neglected and afflict us until He becomes our first love again. Amazingly, Christ’s love for His bride never diminishes, He loves us just as much when we are unfaithful to Him, which is why His love constrains us as our love for Him grows, [2 Corinthians 5:13-15 For whether we be beside ourselves, it is to God: or whether we be sober, it is for your cause. 14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: 15 And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.]
God, deals with each of us as He sees fit for our sin, and no sin goes without consequence. Christians, we are in no way sinless, in fact, we are all just sinners saved by the grace of God through our faith in the Gospel of Christ. However, our obedience to Christ makes us more than just a name in a book, it makes us testimonies of Christ who turned our lives around, even though we are sinners we are still His. In this odd illustration, those who are obedient teach the new Christians how they are to present themselves to their groom.
[Song of Solomon 8:6-7,11,13-14 Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame. 7 Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned. 11 Solomon had a vineyard at Baalhamon; he let out the vineyard unto keepers; every one for the fruit thereof was to bring a thousand pieces of silver. 13 Thou that dwellest in the gardens, the companions hearken to thy voice: cause me to hear it. 14 Make haste, my beloved, and be thou like to a roe or to a young hart upon the mountains of spices.]
Jesus seals our soul with His blood, we are forever settled in the arms of our Saviour. God does not want to take away all our joy in life, but He does want us to seal our heart with love as He loves, that means putting Him first and at the center of all that we do, [2 Timothy 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.]
[Contemned; Despised; scorned; slighted; neglected, or rejected.] Nothing compares to the love of Christ, God is a jealous God, if we love something else more than Him then He will feel neglected and afflict us until He becomes our first love again.
Today’s Prayer: Jesus, You showed us that we are beloved by You when You sacrificed Your life on the cross for us, and offered eternal life to all who believe in and receive You. No matter how much we resist, no matter how many times we back away from You, You are right there, patiently waiting for us to come to You with all that we are going through. You want to comfort us, guide us, and give us hope through all the circumstances we face. Lord, open our ears and hearts, help us to get past our circumstances and turn to You for all things, I know it is only by coming to You that I can truly know I am beloved and that You are beloved by me. In Your name Jesus, Amen.
God Bless You, I am praying for you,
Christina
