Message: Ezekiel: God Judges Egypt

Hello My Friend,

As we continue in the reading of Ezekiel we learn that regardless of the nation God is in control and will send judgment on all of them. There is not one nation in this world that does not have God’s hand upon it, even if it has nothing to do with Him, and will call them out if they are relying on their own strengths and skills. In fact, this passage comes to mind and can apply to all of us as well.

[Revelation 3:15-19  I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.  16  So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.  17  Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:  18  I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.  19  As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.]

There are two types of pride, [Pride; 1. confidence; dignity; self respect; integrity; 2. egotism; self gratification; conceit; condescension; immodest.] We all need to have some kind of pride in order to take personal responsibility for what we are doing, and putting an effort into doing our best with all of our heart into it, However, we need to be careful to make sure that what we giving God the credit for what we are accomplishing, otherwise the wicked side to pride kicks in, [Proverbs 11:2-5  When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.  3  The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them.  4  Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.  5  The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness.]

There are no truer words than these, those who by nature that are kindhearted tend to be more inclined to have self respect and treat others more humanely. It is not as though they do not have some wickedness in them, but they are better at controlling it. Jesus said it this way, [Luke 6:44-45  For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.  45  A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.]

Yesterday we learned that God had judged every nation that dealt with Israel, but had a great deal of emphasis on the nation of Tyre and it was not because they mocked Israel through their fall like the others did. God, was angry with them because they thought that they were untouchable, they prided themselves on their military as well as their skill, in particular one man, the prince. Today, God, goes on to give judgment directly to him.

[Ezekiel 28:2,5-8  Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyrus, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a God, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou art a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart as the heart of God: 5  By thy great wisdom and by thy traffick hast thou increased thy riches, and thine heart is lifted up because of thy riches:  6  Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast set thine heart as the heart of God;  7  Behold, therefore I will bring strangers upon thee, the terrible of the nations: and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of thy wisdom, and they shall defile thy brightness.  8  They shall bring thee down to the pit, and thou shalt die the deaths of them that are slain in the midst of the seas.]

Ethbaal, or Ithobal, was the prince of Tyre being lifted up with excessive pride, he claimed divine honors, meaning he thought himself, not a god, but God Himself. Believe it or not, right now, Satan is the prince of the world. Now, even though God is still addressing Tyre, this is where we discover that the prince He was talking about was him.

[Ezekiel 28:12-15  Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.  13  Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.  14  Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.  15  Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.]

Satan, was an archangel, who had the highest position of all the angels, but that was not enough for him, [Isaiah 14:12-14  How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!  13  For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:  14  I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.] And the day will come when Satan will have his day in court, he will stand before Jesus as well, and will be given the judgment of an eternity in hell and the lake of fire, which God goes on to describe.

[Ezekiel 28:16-19  By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire.  17  Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.  18  Thou hast defiled thy sanctuaries by the multitude of thine iniquities, by the iniquity of thy traffick; therefore will I bring forth a fire from the midst of thee, it shall devour thee, and I will bring thee to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all them that behold thee.  19  All they that know thee among the people shall be astonished at thee: thou shalt be a terror, and never shalt thou be any more.]

We wonder how it is so easy to fall for the deception of Satan, but the truth is, he is good at making himself look as though he is of Christ. It takes a lot of studying and obeying the Word of God in order to find the discrepancies in those who are working for Satan, [2 Corinthians 11:13-15  For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.  14  And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.  15  Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.]

Keep in mind that God nor Satan is to blame for man’s freewill to make the choices they make, neither one can force us to do anything. All the evil may be influenced by Satan, but we are the ones accountable for the life we choose to live as well as where we will spend eternity. Satan, is not the only one who will be judged, his angles as well as all of mankind whom has not accepted Christ as their Saviour. Zidon, was an ancient city near Tyre, and became great allies with them, it was greatly given to idolatry and superstition and for that reason, Ezekiel, is told to look towards this place with a stern and give the warning of its ruin.

[Ezekiel 28:22-24  And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Zidon; and I will be glorified in the midst of thee: and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall have executed judgments in her, and shall be sanctified in her.  23  For I will send into her pestilence, and blood into her streets; and the wounded shall be judged in the midst of her by the sword upon her on every side; and they shall know that I am the LORD.  24  And there shall be no more a pricking brier unto the house of Israel, nor any grieving thorn of all that are round about them, that despised them; and they shall know that I am the Lord GOD.]

This is referring to the Church of Christ, in particular, converted Jews. One day, all the enemies of Christ and His people will be destroyed, including the beast and false prophet, [Revelation 19:20  And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.] However, those whom have accepted Christ as their Saviour will be saved from this judgment, in fact, God goes on to say that He will gather all His people before that day comes.

[Ezekiel 28:25-26  Thus saith the Lord GOD; When I shall have gathered the house of Israel from the people among whom they are scattered, and shall be sanctified in them in the sight of the heathen, then shall they dwell in their land that I have given to my servant Jacob.  26  And they shall dwell safely therein, and shall build houses, and plant vineyards; yea, they shall dwell with confidence, when I have executed judgments upon all those that despise them round about them; and they shall know that I am the LORD their God.]

The day will come when not only the Gentiles whom have been joined together as one with Israel but Jews as well will be called to gather together and they will become one nation sanctified under the blood of Christ. Jesus, said it this way, [John 17:16-20  They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.  17  Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.  18  As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.  19  And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.  20  Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;]

Satan, and his minions may be laughing right now, but they will face a judgment much worse than God’s people will ever get, [Revelation 20:10,13  And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.  13  And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.  14  And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.]

God, had been known to use Egypt over the centuries, at one time, it was a great and powerful nation, in fact, many of the things we enjoy today were invented by the Egyptians. However, during the time of Jerusalem’s fall, the Pharaoh proudly boasted of having established a kingdom so strong that even God was not powerful enough to take it from Him. Egypt’s pride and joy, of course, was the Nile River, to which God sent Ezekiel to Egypt to foretell of how He will use the very Nile to send judge on them.

[Ezekiel 29:2-6  Son of man, set thy face against Pharaoh king of Egypt, and prophesy against him, and against all Egypt:  3  Speak, and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, Pharaoh king of Egypt, the great dragon that lieth in the midst of his rivers, which hath said, My river is mine own, and I have made it for myself.  4  But I will put hooks in thy jaws, and I will cause the fish of thy rivers to stick unto thy scales, and I will bring thee up out of the midst of thy rivers, and all the fish of thy rivers shall stick unto thy scales.  5  And I will leave thee thrown into the wilderness, thee and all the fish of thy rivers: thou shalt fall upon the open fields; thou shalt not be brought together, nor gathered: I have given thee for meat to the beasts of the field and to the fowls of the heaven.  6  And all the inhabitants of Egypt shall know that I am the LORD, because they have been a staff of reed to the house of Israel.]

It is probable that Hophra was the Pharaoh during this time, he was represented as the great dragon, or crocodile that lies in the midst of his rivers to deceive and devour its prey. However, Satan, is the true great dragon and has one agenda, to keep a soul from Christ, and he will deceive and devour his prey through their pride to do it. Nevertheless, the day will come, when He will be destroyed, [Revelation 12:9-10  And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.  10  And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.]

Egypt being a staff of reed to Israel is referring to when the king of Egypt had first come in to take Judah captive against Nebuchadnezzar, [2 Chronicles 36:4-6  And the king of Egypt made Eliakim his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem, and turned his name to Jehoiakim. And Necho took Jehoahaz his brother, and carried him to Egypt.  5  Jehoiakim was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem: and he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD his God. 6  Against him came up Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and bound him in fetters, to carry him to Babylon.]

In other words, Egypt, pretended to be a staff for them to lean upon, but when any stress was laid upon them, they became weak and could not stand by them. In fact, God, had told them, long ago that the Egyptians were broken reeds, [Isaiah 30:1-3,7  Woe to the rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin:  2  That walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt!  3  Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion. 7  For the Egyptians shall help in vain, and to no purpose: therefore have I cried concerning this, Their strength is to sit still.]

All of Israel’s dependence on Egypt proved hurtful instead of beneficial and this went all the way back to when they went to Egypt during the famine, [Genesis 46:3-4  And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation:  4  I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes.]. Egypt, was supposed to be a temporary dwelling for Israel until the famine was over, then they were to head home, but became slaves to them for four hundred years. God, never forgot what they had done to them, but unlike His judgments to make the other nations desolate forever, that was not the case for Egypt.

[Ezekiel 29:11-14  No foot of man shall pass through it, nor foot of beast shall pass through it, neither shall it be inhabited forty years.  12  And I will make the land of Egypt desolate in the midst of the countries that are desolate, and her cities among the cities that are laid waste shall be desolate forty years: and I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations, and will disperse them through the countries. 13  Yet thus saith the Lord GOD; At the end of forty years will I gather the Egyptians from the people whither they were scattered:  14  And I will bring again the captivity of Egypt, and will cause them to return into the land of Pathros, into the land of their habitation; and they shall be there a base kingdom.]

Forty years? How interesting is it that God gave the judgment of forty years just like He did with Israel? [Numbers 14:34-35  After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.  35  I the LORD have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.]

Perhaps it was just a coincidence, but I think it did have something to do with what went on here even though they did not deal with Egypt during that time. However, their becoming a base kingdom means that while they would be restored as a nation, they would never regain their status of being a powerful nation. God, goes on to describe how they will become desolate when Nebuchadnezzar would take it from them.

[Ezekiel 29:19-21  Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will give the land of Egypt unto Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall take her multitude, and take her spoil, and take her prey; and it shall be the wages for his army.  20  I have given him the land of Egypt for his labour wherewith he served against it, because they wrought for me, saith the Lord GOD.  21  In that day will I cause the horn of the house of Israel to bud forth, and I will give thee the opening of the mouth in the midst of them; and they shall know that I am the LORD.]

Interestingly, those forty years began about the thirtieth year that Jeconiah was taken into captivity, and ended the seventieth year of Judah being taken out of captivity. And that opening for Israel will be when the Son of God Himself would be hidden there for a few years after He was born, [Matthew 2:13-15  And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.  14  When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:  15  And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.]

Satan, nations, and people can turn away from God all they want, but that does not change the fact that He is still in control of everything and sooner or later all will know that He is LORD. In order for our nations to be blessed we as individuals need to take a stand and realize that we cannot do this alone. Through Ezekiel, God continues foretelling His judgment on Egypt, but that he should also lament for them also.

[Ezekiel 30:2-6,8  Son of man, prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Howl ye, Woe worth the day!  3  For the day is near, even the day of the LORD is near, a cloudy day; it shall be the time of the heathen.  4  And the sword shall come upon Egypt, and great pain shall be in Ethiopia, when the slain shall fall in Egypt, and they shall take away her multitude, and her foundations shall be broken down.  5  Ethiopia, and Libya, and Lydia, and all the mingled people, and Chub, and the men of the land that is in league, shall fall with them by the sword.  6  Thus saith the LORD; They also that uphold Egypt shall fall; and the pride of her power shall come down: from the tower of Syene shall they fall in it by the sword, saith the Lord GOD. 8  And they shall know that I am the LORD, when I have set a fire in Egypt, and when all her helpers shall be destroyed.]

This took place when the rebels of Judah escaped to Egypt, [Jeremiah 44:26-27,29-30  Therefore hear ye the word of the LORD, all Judah that dwell in the land of Egypt; Behold, I have sworn by my great name, saith the LORD, that my name shall no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, The Lord GOD liveth.  27  Behold, I will watch over them for evil, and not for good: and all the men of Judah that are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine, until there be an end of them. 29  And this shall be a sign unto you, saith the LORD, that I will punish you in this place, that ye may know that my words shall surely stand against you for evil:  30  Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will give Pharaoh-hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies, and into the hand of them that seek his life; as I gave Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, his enemy, and that sought his life.]

Hophra, had given much time and labor into irrigation works in Lower Egypt to bring a canal from the Nile to the Red Sea, and he, like the kings of Tyrus and Babylon thought of himself as the creator of his own power. He believed he firmly established his kingdom, and that there was no god that could cast him out of it. Egypt, never seemed to grasp the concept that God was, and still is always in control, but they will as He takes away their very strength.

[Ezekiel 30:12-13,18  And I will make the rivers dry, and sell the land into the hand of the wicked: and I will make the land waste, and all that is therein, by the hand of strangers: I the LORD have spoken it.  13  Thus saith the Lord GOD; I will also destroy the idols, and I will cause their images to cease out of Noph; and there shall be no more a prince of the land of Egypt: and I will put a fear in the land of Egypt. 18  At Tehaphnehes also the day shall be darkened, when I shall break there the yokes of Egypt: and the pomp of her strength shall cease in her: as for her, a cloud shall cover her, and her daughters shall go into captivity.]

This is proof that God will bring down everyone’s pride one way or another and whatever it is that they are putting their strength in will crumble. They will also learn that there is only one living God and as soon as they shall hear of the king of Babylon entering into it, their courage, bravery, and fortitude, shall at once leave them, and they shall be dispirited, and have no heart to defend themselves, and oppose the enemy, which God explains as the breaking of the Pharaoh’s arm.

[Ezekiel 30:21-22,25-26  Son of man, I have broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and, lo, it shall not be bound up to be healed, to put a roller to bind it, to make it strong to hold the sword.  22  Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt, and will break his arms, the strong, and that which was broken; and I will cause the sword to fall out of his hand. 25  But I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon, and the arms of Pharaoh shall fall down; and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall put my sword into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall stretch it out upon the land of Egypt.  26  And I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations, and disperse them among the countries; and they shall know that I am the LORD.]

God did not literally break his arm, he broke the strength of them as a powerful nation. Egypt had been a cruel oppressor of God’s people and a broken rod to them, now, God by breaking his arm as He judges him for both. The king of Egypt shall be in fear for his life when he finds himself in danger of the king of Babylon’s forces. He shall groan before him with the groaning, but will not find mercy. This is also a picture of the day that God will break the arm of Satan, destroy him once and for all, and all who follow him, [Revelation 21:7-8  He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.  8  But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.]

Today’s Prayer: God, You love us so much, You want to see us prosper and give us everything we want and need, all You ask in return is that we lead souls to Your Son. With all the temptations of the world, and the devil right there trying to manipulate us, it can make us weary. However, we can do all things by Your power. Lord, Lead us and guide us, give us Your power to endure the hardness, let us acknowledge You in all that You bless us with at all times so we no do forget that it is You who gives us everything we have. Put Your hedge of protection around us to shield us from all evil. Should we fall, get us back up and moving forward as we await the day You come for us. I ask these things in Your name, Jesus. Amen.

God Bless You, I am praying for you,
Christina
