Message: Trusted With The Gospel

Hello My Friend,

Last night a statement of trust came up between my husband as for a long time I believed that God does not just trust me. Then it occurred to me as I was praying this morning that I was wrong. I may be as Paul said, a chief of sinners, but God not only trusts me in that He revealed His Son to me so that I might trust Him as my Saviour, He also trusts me to learn and teach His Word. Jesus said this to Peter and is saying it to all His faithful, [John 21:18  Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.]

In other words, when Jesus gave the command for all He disciples to preach the Gospel, [Matthew 28:19  Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:] He did not do so with the intent that we all become teachers, preachers, missionaries, and evangelists, He did so with the intent that all of His faithful regardless of who they are would use their testimonies to tell the world about Him. Now, who not better to tell the story of Jesus than your own testimony of how Jesus saved not only your soul, but your life in general, [1 Thessalonians 2:4  But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.]

[Trust; Confidence; a reliance or resting of the mind on the integrity, veracity, justice, friendship or other sound principle of another person; That which is committed to one’s care; To place confidence in; to rely on.] Trust is not something that comes easy for any of us as we learn early on in life that the heart is evil and deceitful in that even we have been guilty of betraying the trust of others. However, the one we can always trust is Jesus and what He has done not only for us, but through us. As we come to the end of the reading of the Gospels, John, gives his account of Christ’s passion. We learned previously from John what Jesus said to Pilate about Him being a KING, but not of this world.

[John 18:36-37  Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.  37  Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.]

Keep note that if anyone who trusts that Jesus came here to save us sinners so that they might live through Him they not only hear His voice, they are accepted by Him. John’s account of Christ’s passion is by far the most detailed of all the others in regards to the conversations that Jesus had with Pilate as well as what took place after His resurrection. John, goes on to describe how Pilate attempted to free Jesus, but not before having Him scourged, which means to be severely punished.

[John 19:1-6  Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.  2  And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,  3  And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.  4  Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.  5  Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man! 6  When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.]

[came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns,] While Matthew, Mark, and Luke do record Jesus being crowned with the crown of thorns and covered with the purple robe, John, shows that Jesus stood before the crowd wearing them. Whenever a person was scourged, they were severely whipped with flogs, whips, and Cat o’ nine tails, which is a chain with a ball at the end that has a nail sticking out of it. So needless to say it was not a pretty sight and the crowd was not happy with just seeing Jesus neatly beaten to death.

[John 19:7-11  The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.  8  When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;  9  And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.  10  Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?  11  Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.]

[have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above:] In other words, this is the will of God and nothing and no one is powerful enough to stop Him from being crucified unless God said otherwise. However, the one who was responsible for bringing Him to him, also known as Caiaphas, is more to blame than he is. We may not like the will of God, but as long as we trust Him, He will not only see us through the pain, He will use that pain and turn it into a powerful testimony, [1 Peter 3:14-15  But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled;  15  But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:]

Could you imagine the fear that Pilate had? The Sanhedrim had already said that Jesus made Himself the Son of God, but all of this was out of his control too, not to mention the people screaming, “Crucify him, crucify him!”. Perhaps Pilate did realize that Jesus truly is the Son of God that day, but that did not change the fact that the Jews were determined to kill Him no matter what the outcome. So, in order to keep perhaps a riot from starting Pilate agreed, [John 19:13-15  When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.  14  And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!  15  But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.]

[The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.] It is interesting that it was the chief priests who said this. Was not God supposed to be their Sovereign? And yet here they were proclaiming that their king was a man. This was the same thing that the Jews did when they demanded a king to rule over them in the first place, but to hear it from a priest, that was the lowest they could get and God keeps note of that too, [1 Samuel 8:7,9  And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. 9  Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them.]

[Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified.] Pilate, did try three times to get them to release Jesus, but realized that there was nothing he could do and therefore, delivered Him to be crucified. [John 19:16-18,23-24  Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.  17  And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:  18  Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst. 23  Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.  24  They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.]

[that the scripture might be fulfilled,] John, is referring to this passage, [Psalms 22:15-18  My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.  16  For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.  17  I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.  18  They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.]

Even though Jesus said that all the Apostles would scatter the second He got captured, when it came to Him being led to Calvary John was there along with His mother and some of the other ladies. Jesus, watching over the crowd sees John with His mother and speaks directly to him.

[John 19:25-30  Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.  26  When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!  27  Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.  28  After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst. 29  Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.  30  When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.]

[Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished,] Right there, Jesus not only knew that the will of His Father had been done, He also knew that everything written from the Scriptures regarding His coming here to reconcile God with man once and for all had been fulfilled as well. This was the passage that John was referring to, [Psalms 69:20-21  Reproach hath broken my heart; and I am full of heaviness: and I looked for some to take pity, but there was none; and for comforters, but I found none.  21  They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.]

[When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished:] Whether we care to admit it or not, everything is under God’s control, and while we do have the power to choose how we respond, we cannot go against what is already predestined. There are some things that we cannot avoid, and must come to pass as it is written for even us. Why? So that we might be conformed to someone resembling His Son, [Romans 8:29-30  For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.  30  Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.]

Now, as the Sabbath drew near and the other two men were still alive, in order to speed up the process so they would not be hanging there come sunset, they decided to break their legs, but when they came to Jesus they noticed that He had already died, but one of the soldiers did pierce His side with his spear.

[John 19:32-37  Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.  33  But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:  34  But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.  35  And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.  36  For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken. 37  And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.]

[They shall look on him whom they pierced.] John, was referring to this verse, [Zechariah 12:10  And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.]

Yesterday I mention that Joseph of Arimathaea and Nicodemus were the only two members of the Sanhedrim that did not agree with the others to have Jesus killed. Now, we learn that both of them were there to bury Jesus, [John 19:38-40  And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.  39  And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.  40  Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.]

[and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes,] These were not the embalming spices that the ladies had prepared to put on His body after the Sabbath, these were to preserve His body until that time. Even though Jesus had been telling them the whole time that He would raise from the dead three days later they did not comprehend it and therefore followed the same procedures as they would any other person who died, [Matthew 20:18-19  Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death,  19  And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.]

Jesus dying in our place was actually enough to break the curse of death passed down to man due to sin, but He went beyond that by giving every believer eternal life with Him. How did Jesus do that? When He arose from the dead. John, also gives the account of Mary Magdalene and the other women coming to the tomb on the first day of the week, but he also tells of him and Peter running to the tomb.

[John 20:1-4  The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.  2  Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.  3  Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.  4  So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.]

[the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.] Hearing the news that Jesus was gone could have either been exciting or unbelievable to them, but either way they wanted to know right away if it was true. At first the two ran together, but John outran Peter and arrived at the tomb first, but stopping to catch his breath Peter went inside first.

[John 20:5-9  And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.  6  Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie,  7  And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.  8  Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.  9  For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.]

[For as yet they knew not the scripture,] While it is true that there is plenty of Scripture that points to Christ’s birth and crucifixion, there are not many that point to His resurrection, which Jesus Himself said that the only sign given would be Jonah, [Matthew 16:4  A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed.]

However, the writings of the Old Testament in various places do point out the resurrection of Christ, in particular Isaiah Chapter 26, in which he said, [Isaiah 26:13-14,19  O LORD our God, other lords beside thee have had dominion over us: but by thee only will we make mention of thy name.  14  They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise: therefore hast thou visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish. 19  Thy dead men shall live, together with my dead body shall they arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the dew of herbs, and the earth shall cast out the dead.]

Now, after learning that Jesus was not in the tomb they were still trying to grasp what is going on. Mary, returns to the tomb and that was where she saw the two angels, then Jesus just appears, [John 20:13-17  And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.  14  And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.  15  Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.  16  Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.  17  Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.]

[She, supposing him to be the gardener,] Just like the others, she did not recognize Him at first, but quickly discovered who it was the second He spoke her name. Is that not incredible that we have that same reaction? Jesus said this, [John 10:15-16  As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.  16  And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.]

Speaking of sheep, later that day as the Apostles and other believers gathered in a room hidden from the Jews to discuss the matter, Jesus, appears, and something incredible happened. He spoke to them, and breathed on them, literally giving life to their souls and they knew it too.

[John 20:20-24  And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.  21  Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.  22  And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:  23  Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.  24  But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.]

[Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them;] [Remit; To relax; To forgive; To surrender the right of punishing a crime; To pardon.] In other words, those who admit their sin, believe in Him, and accept Him, not only are pardoned of their sin, they receive the Holy Spirit or Spirit of God to their souls as well. However, those who do not will remain in their sin and not receive anything, [James 1:5-7  If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.  6  But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.  7  For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.]

Speaking of faith, there was one Apostle that was not there, that was Thomas and he refused to believe that they saw Jesus unless he saw some proof, [John 20:25-27  The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.  26  And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.  27  Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.]

[And after eight days again his disciples were within,] It took Jesus eight days before He showed Himself to Thomas, but He made sure that what He knew that what he about to see was not about seeing it, but believing in what he was seeing, [John 20:28-31  And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.  29  Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.  30  And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:  31  But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.]

[that believing ye might have life through his name.] Do you know how many people see something miraculous right before their eyes and still do not believe in the power of God? Jesus wanted Thomas to understand that seeing Him was not believing in Him, but He must have faith to believe in what he was seeing. You know, we can see some amazing things with our eyes, imagine what we can really see by opening them to Jesus? Blessed are those who have faith and believe without seeing, for they will truly see the power of God working in their lives, [1 John 5:13-15  These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.  14  And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:  15  And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.]

Peter and John spent three and a half years ministering to Jesus, now, that He was gone the only thing they thought to do was go back to the life they lived before Christ. They discovered, just like the rest of us, that once you receive Christ you cannot go back to the live you lived before receiving Him. They went fishing with some of the other disciples, but could not catch any fish, until Jesus showed up on the shore and told them where to cast the net. At first, no one knew that it was Jesus, but as soon as John saw the fish, he knew right away that it was Jesus. As they returned back to shore with the fish they already find Jesus there with a fire and fish.

[John 21:1-4  After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself.  2  There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of his disciples.  3  Simon Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing. They say unto him, We also go with thee. They went forth, and entered into a ship immediately; and that night they caught nothing.  4  But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus.]

[Peter saith unto them, I go a fishing.] These men did not know what to do anymore after they had spent so much time with Jesus so they did went back to the life they lived. However, there is no going back to the life we lived after we get saved, it is literally impossible because we are given a new life, [Hebrews 6:4-6  For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,  5  And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,  6  If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.]

Believe me, there are plenty of people who put their salvation to shame by living some ungodly lives, but it is not for us to judge them, it is for us to minister to them though. Even simple things that we use to do are a reminder that we can do nothing without Jesus. Well, as they returned back to shore with the fish they Jesus was there with a fire and fish, [John 21:7-10  Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher’s coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea.  8  And the other disciples came in a little ship; (for they were not far from land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes.  9  As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.  10  Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught.]

[they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread.] So, why did Jesus tell them to cast their nets and bring in more fish when He had food waiting for them? Jesus is always going to take care of us, He just wants us to make an effort to do what He calls us to do. By the way, He did not tell them to go back to their old life, they had come to far to go back to their lives as mere fishermen. Remember, Jesus made them to become fishers of men, as He does all of His disciples. You see, trusting in someone is not always about not falling from time to time, it is about getting back up doing our best when we do. Peter, denied Jesus, but that did not stop Jesus from using him to continue the work He began.

[John 21:15,17-17  So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.  17  He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.]

This is the great commission in a nutshell, you get saved by grace, then you publicly profess your faith by getting baptized in water, and as you start living your life through Christ, you lead others to Him as well and start the cycle all over again. It is not for us to question the way others live or even the will of God for them, we are here to do what God called us to do. To point this out, Peter, watched as John followed Jesus, and aska what job He have for him, [John 21:20-23  Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?  21  Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?  22  Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.  23  Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?]

[If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?] Jesus, was telling Peter that He has a specific path for him and a specific one for John as well, so do not worry about what he is doing, just follow Him. This is what Jesus is telling us also, God’s will for my life is not the same as His will for your life, every one of us has our own course to run in which He gives us. We are finish our course by aiming to please God, and no one else, never looking back, and always pressing toward the prize once we finish our course, [Philippians 3:13-15  Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,  14  I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.  15  Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.]

Jesus Christ Revealed/Magnified: [John 20:17  Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. John 20:23  Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.]

Today’s Prayer: Jesus, Thank You, again for taking my place on the cross, for dying to save my soul from death and hell though my faith alone in You. While I do not need to do anything to keep my salvation for it is now eternal, I do want to live the rest of my time here by patiently running the course that You have laid out for me. Through the sorrow, through the pain, through the suffering, keep my eyes, ears, mind, and heart on the truth that I have finished my course and will receive my crown of righteousness. While I am here, everything I need will be given by You though my faith, and as long as I ask for them, I know You will provide. LORD, lead me and guide me, keep my heart tender, my faith strong, and my mind in Your mercy and grace, give me Your power to walk by faith and not by sight, and give me Your strength to continue my course patiently until it is done. I ask these things in Your name, Jesus. Amen.

God Bless You, I am praying for you,
Christina
